What a fantastic taste of Latin American cuisine! The menu is authentic, and spans many different countries. The staff are more than wonderful in helping you chose what to try and explaining things. The portions are huge, and the desserts are delectable!

Superb central American / Latin American food. Always crowded so you may have a wait but worth it. Nothing Anglicized here (thank you!!!)

“Authentic Home Cooked Latin Cuisine”
Reviewed May 17, 2011

First, its necessary to clarify this restaurant does not solely serve "Mexican" food, if you are looking for Mexican go to Under the Volcano. El Ranchito is Latin cuisine which involves far more than tacos and fajitas.

If you are looking for a variety or simply in the mood for sampling what Latin cuisine has to offer one of their platters is a good choice. Their Paella is exactly how my boyfriends mother makes it- maybe better shh- delicious. If you crave savory try fried plantain for an appetizer. Its sweet, usually served with a salty cheese or fresh crema. This crema is used in quite a few of their dishes, listed as sour cream, it really is a variation of the sort with a runny consistency, but that is authentic, you can find it at Hernandez Market or Latino Market in a huge tub. Shredded pork tacos in soft corn tortillas topped with pineapple are surprisingly exceptional - comes in four and although doesn't look like much but really fills you up. Desserts such as deep-fried ice cream are good but the outside was a little strange. The ice cream was rolled in what seemed like corn flakes before being fried, and the inside has large chunks of chocolate. The flavor and texture worked really well together but the chocolate inside was difficult to spoon through because it was so cold. Another dessert dish is the Mexican flan which is a very light jiggly mount of sweet caramelized custard. Many South American countries have this dish each under a different name.

As to the atmosphere and service:
Atmosphere, does leave a little to be desired but definitely gives it homey feel. Basic 90's tables and chairs.
Service, I think it helps that my boyfriend speaks Spanish because the waitress appeared more attentive to us after that. I really think the wait staff just have issues keeping up with everyone and everything.

“Our visit was very disappointing.”
Reviewed March 10, 2011

This was our first time visiting El Ranchito and I expected a family run mexican restaurant to be better than the mexican franchises, but this was NOT the case. The premises is old, unattractive, and cluttered. The table server was not friendly and the service was provided with minimal effort. The food was very disapointing. We ordered the tacos and chicken fajitas. The fajitas were made with only a few strips of onion and pepper. The rest was made with chicken scraps and the meat was overcooked and dry. The condiments were minimal and the sour cream was runny and no spoon was provided. The home made pico galo was a literally a few pieces of tomato on lettuce. The tacos were tiny and the meat was overcooked and dry also. Our dinner came to $32 and we did not leave a tip. We do not intend to return.
