In a word: Mediocre.
Not mediocre-bad, just mediocre-okay.
It was a cold damp workday noon hour and we were there to try the Vietnamese soup with rice noodles and beef. We had been introduced to the dish in Toronto and we’ve had some pretty good bowls of soup there so we had fairly high expectations.
After entering, we selected our own seat in a 12-table open dining room. The restaurant is more of a phone-in/take-out place. During our visit the sole waitress spent most of her time taking phone orders or packaging take-out orders. Basic table service seemed to be a secondary task.
Tea was provided. It was warm but not hot. I prefer hot tea…at least in the wintertime.
For an appetiser we mistakenly ordered cold shrimp rolls which consisted of shrimp rolled into a large wad of lettuce. The rolls weren’t very tasty even when dipped into chopped onion and hoisin sauce. We were not provided with individual plates so the operation soon became rather messy.
When our soup orders came they were also warm but certainly not piping hot. Serving portions(S,M) were generous enough and there was an acceptable amount of beef in the soup. However there was very little else besides the rice noodles and it was mostly a plain broth taste.
Our waitress had greeted us in a friendly manner but took our order, brought our dishes, and finally took our payment in a very perfunctory way. There was a noticeable delay between the time we signalled our request for the bill and when we were actually able to pay. The takeout side of the business had an obvious priority.
We paid about $25 for the meal including tip. Overall, we didn’t think we got good value for our money.
We’ll continue our London search for good Vietnamese soup...elsewhere.
