In a word: Mediocre.

Not mediocre-bad, just mediocre-okay.

It was a cold damp workday noon hour and we were there to try the Vietnamese soup with rice noodles and beef. We had been introduced to the dish in Toronto and we’ve had some pretty good bowls of soup there so we had fairly high expectations.

After entering, we selected our own seat in a 12-table open dining room. The restaurant is more of a phone-in/take-out place. During our visit the sole waitress spent most of her time taking phone orders or packaging take-out orders. Basic table service seemed to be a secondary task.

Tea was provided. It was warm but not hot. I prefer hot tea…at least in the wintertime.

For an appetiser we mistakenly ordered cold shrimp rolls which consisted of shrimp rolled into a large wad of lettuce. The rolls weren’t very tasty even when dipped into chopped onion and hoisin sauce. We were not provided with individual plates so the operation soon became rather messy.

When our soup orders came they were also warm but certainly not piping hot. Serving portions(S,M) were generous enough and there was an acceptable amount of beef in the soup. However there was very little else besides the rice noodles and it was mostly a plain broth taste.

Our waitress had greeted us in a friendly manner but took our order, brought our dishes, and finally took our payment in a very perfunctory way. There was a noticeable delay between the time we signalled our request for the bill and when we were actually able to pay. The takeout side of the business had an obvious priority.

We paid about $25 for the meal including tip. Overall, we didn’t think we got good value for our money.

We’ll continue our London search for good Vietnamese soup...elsewhere.

“Not bad”

It's not our favourite vietnamese place, but they close late at 11pm. It's mainly chinese food, and chinese version of pho. The food is still quite good.

“More like a "tribute" restaurant to Vietnamese cuisine”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2013

We have eaten at Vietnam Taste restaurant many times. It is run by Chinese people who speak Mandarin. The food is a mix of Chinese and Vietnamese. They have a fair selection of noodle dishes like "Pho" and "Bun" and Pad Thai (which is eaten in most of South East Asia, not just Vietnam or Thailand), The price is average and the food is adequate. Nothing particularly exceptionally but it is situated near the University and apartment buildings so is quite popular for students.

We frequent this restaurant because we enjoy Asian cuisine and because it is very close to home. Also, unless there is a full house, the food arrives within a few minutes of placing the order. The wait staff are generally "untrained" in comparison to other higher end restaurants so don't expect the same kind of service. Keep your expectations clear and this restaurant will satisfy both your hunger and your budget.

“Great Food Close By - A family favourite”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2013

We eat at this restaurant all the time. Its in a small strip mall around the corner from our home. It competes with four other restaurants in the mall. The interior is very basic - you won't be looking for posh dining here. The food though is great. A variety of appetizers (I usually get the Rice Wrap Salad Beef Rolls), Pho's, Soups, bun, wok dishes, rice dishes etc - probably 70 items. We've had the pad thai, various soups and pho and have never been disappointed. The portions are generous. We usually order on-line iwth just-eat.ca or call for take out. If aating in you get tea with your meal. Usually the 20 or so seats are well filled. The service while friendly is nt always orderly.. e.g. you may get your entree before your appetizer. We don't care as we just enjoy the food in this small unpretentious "diner".
