The Dancing Greek Taverna, recently renovated, is tucked in behind the Huron House restaurant, using a common entrance. The Huron House has been in the same spot for decades and is in its second or third generation of family ownership, led by the ever hospitable Jimmy Agathos.
I wandered in alone last Saturday night because I was in the mood for Greek seafood. I was in Greece last year for a couple of weeks and became spoiled by the great food in Athens and Mykonos. So, I was a little hesitant at what was touted as 'authentic Greek cuisine".
Seated in the back half of the Dancing Greek, I faced a small stage where two obviously Greek gentlemen played traditional music on traditional instruments. Bravo #1
The renovated dining area is in traditional Agean blue and white with scenes painted inside the spaced wall arches. Bravo #2
The large menu was presented and explained almost instantly, and when I couldn't find exactly what I wanted for an appetizer (feta + olives + bread) the server was quick to oblige. The cheese was 2 thick slices of wonderful quality feta drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with oregon. The olives were in a small ramekin and were average. The bread was softer than that of the Greek isles. Bravo #3
I opted for one of the more expensive entrees ($28), char-broiled the sea bass Royal Dorado, as I had ordered in Athens. It came head to tail complete. The skin was nicely charred on both sides and the flesh moist and perfectly cooked. It was garnished with pickled beets,(an interesting choice) and sauteed greens. The only draw back was the dish lacked a true starch. The advertised roast potatoes were absent. However, the qualitly and taste was fantastic. Bravo #4
Midway through the meal, the family patriarch and founder came through the dining room, stopping by my table and chatting. He visited every table in the house. It was just incredible to see that personal touch. Bravo #5
I didn't have dessert because the entree was so large, but will put that on my list next time I visit.
When I left, not only was I full but also relaxed having just been to Greece for an hour.
