“stay clear of the restaurant!!”
Reviewed May 22, 2005

just a little tidbit if info for anybody looking for a good place to eat, DONT VISIT THE RESTAURANT AT HOJOS!! we were there on may 22 2005 hoping to get a good breakfast. we were seated and given coffee very quickly, we sat for over 20 minutes before anybody came to our table, it was clear that it was mass chaos in there, as the servers were bumping into each other and nobody seemed to know what they were supposed to do. our coffee being finished and a server coming to the table to fill our creamers we asked for another coffee. the reply was "we have a very slow coffee maker", we watched other servers going around with coffee and taking orders and still nothing, i thought we were invisible. another server saw the annoyance on our faces and took our order, 45 minutes later still no food and still not another cup of coffee, an hour later we left $4 on the table told the server we have never seen anything like this before and her reply was (extremely ingnorant) "well we're busy". we were going to book a room at the hotel but after treatment like that, we stayed very "comfort"ably at another motel. what a nightmare!!

This has got to be the most run down establishment I have ever had to stay in! Carpets were disgusting, the service was something to laugh at and the building is run down!

The price is very cheap, so I guess you get what you pay for, but this place is something else! Stay away at all costs!

There aren't enough words to describe how dreadful this hotel is, but I'll try - dirty, grubby, smelly, rusty, unpleasant, filthy, disgusting.

When we arrived in Kingston, which is a lovely place to visit and stay because there's so much to see and do and people are so friendly, there was unfortunately some kind of University graduation weekend and so the only rooms available at any downtown hotels were in the Howard Johnson (HOJO).

We were initially told that there were fully booked, but if we wanted a smoking room then they could find us something. Both me and my husband both smoke, so we didn't really mind. The first room we had was on the 1st floor, which is really the basement because it's kind of on a slope up from the harbour. From the minute we stepped out of the elevator into a dingy, dirty, smelly corridor right next to the laundry room we realised we'd made a terrible mistake booking in for four days. After finding our way through the revolting corridor to our room, we opened the door to what can only be described as a hovel - the place stank of smoke (but too much even for a smoker), the beds looked dirty (I didn't even want to sit on them, let alone sleep in them), there was hardly any natural light because it was blocked by trees, the patio door nearly fell apart when we opened it to get some fresh air, and it was right on the edge of a pavement that people used to access the harbour and a few bars that were next door.

I daren't touch anything, but had to ring them to tell them we were not satisfied and could we have another room. They gave us another room which was okay, but even then the standards of the room were awful - there were stains on the ceiling (which was kind of white breezeblock), rust in the bathroom in the sink, on the toilet roll holder and in the bath, and cigarette burns on the carpet. It wasn't too bad, but not very nice at all.

This hotel would greatly benefit from a complete refurbishment to change it from 1970s bad porno movie set to a stylish modern 21st century hotel.

The only redeeming feature of this hotel is it's location and the staff, who obviously had little to work with in order to keep the guests happy.

The other things I would say about Kingston are to make sure you visit Morrisons cafe for a slap-up breakfast, don't go to the Gourmet Pizza place (it's a waste of money), and make sure you take a day out to Gananoque to do a 3 hour tour of the 1000 islands. Fort Henry is also quite close, and relatively interesting but only for families or people of an age who can remember the 2nd world war. The two Irish pubs (Toucan and Kirkpatrick) are extremely welcoming and we spent at least 4 hours in there one day drinking and chatting to the locals.

Kingston? Love it, definitely go back. HOJO's? Never again, in any state or country.

The staff and management at the Howard Johnson are wonderful! Their warm and caring spirits are deeply appreciated. My husband and I travelled to the hotel from the U.S for several years in order to receive cancer treatment in Kingston. Often, my husband alone as I could not leave my job. The staff took care of him like he was one of the family. I never had to worry. Even the housekeepers would check up on him. Top marks to everyone from housekeeping to management!

Our family stayed at the Howard Johnson in Kingston and had the best time ever. The staff was friendly and helpful, our family suite was clean spacious and comfortable and the restaurant and patio was fabulous. Great location and excellent value.

Stay away from this hotel. We stayed for 2 days, September 2003. Cost $179Cdn/night. Room was disgusting. The carpet was so stained that we kept our socks on all the time. The power went out on one side of the room including the TV. After 3 complaints, it was not fixed until Sat evening. We sat in the dining room for breadfast for 15 min and no service! Overpriced, filthy room and poor service. Stay away!

There really was nothing about the HJ in Kingston that we were happy with except its location in the heart of Kingston. The 'suite' as they called it was nothing more than a conference room with a couch. We were told it would open onto the pool but in fact it opened onto a parking lot where the tour buses parked. The stucco ceiling in the room was falling apart in places and the air conditioner was noisy and barely kept the place below sweltering. After we finished (and paid for) breakfast the front desk clerk gave us coupons for free breakfast-no refunds though-. The room wasn't dirty but it smelled musty and stale.
And all this for over $200.00 per night. There are lots of other hotels on the waterfront and you can do much better than HJ.
