Holiday Inn Kingston - Waterfront
Ranked #14 of 37 Hotels in Kingston
Reviewed July 29, 2010

The room was fantastic, but the balcony and the restaurant were not. The balcony was filthy. The walls, floor and outdoor furniture were disgusting, not sure when they would have been cleaned. The restaurant tried to be high end but for a family oriented hotel it was dismal. Way over priced, nothing on the menu anyone with children would be able to order. Other drawback, you have to pay for parking. Policy should be, if you are staying at the hotel, free parking all others have to pay. With parking and taxes this put our room at over $230.00 a night, overpriced for Kingston I'd say.

The Holiday Inn Kingston Waterfront is very well located in Kingston's waterfront and offers an amazing view of the lake. It is also very pleasant to sit at the restaurant patio while admiring the boats on the water. The outdoor pool is also a fantastic spot to relax. And great belgium wafles for breakfast!

Carefully picked a 4th floor room (451) at the "most watery" end of the building so we had a great view. Reception was businesslike, but not a warm welcome. The room was just fine. They booked a dinner reservation for us without an issue.
The outside pool has some issues, which the lifeguards attempt to address by manually skimming the bugs and debris out from the deep end. If that wasn't done, it will just build up. The filtration system and skimmers obviously don't do their job. Luckily the lifeguards were up to the task, skimming the pool every few minutes.
Sat outside at the restaurant and ordered some snacks. Not good, not bad. I would skip this restaurant next time.
I would recommend this hotel purely for the view alone. Handily placed downtown very close to all the action.

We're just home from a stay at the Holiday Inn Waterfront, which we book based on it's wonderful location and reviews on this site. The location didn't disappoint: our room overlooked the waterfront and hotel's terrific outdoor pool (much nicer than the tired indoor pool), and only a stroll away from some great restaurants, stores, etc. Add to that the parking lot immediately adjacent to the hotel and you really can't beat the convenience of this hotel. According to many other reviews on this site, the hotel has been spruced up in recent years. This is apparent in the lobby, hallways, and even in the main area of our room, which was lovely and very comfortable, however, I would say the bathroom in our room is lagging behind. Just like the indoor pool area, it had a generally tired feel. Our toilet ran constantly and refused to flush more than once very 40 minutes or so - a definite drawback when a family of four is rushing to get out in the morning - and the plug mechanism on the tub was missing, making it virtually impossibly to drain the tub once it was filled. ( Our son eventually was able to release the thing using brute force.) The overall bathroom situation put a bit of a damper on an otherwise pleasing room situation. These small inconveniences were an annoyance, but would not prevent us from staying here again, as the hotel has many great attributes, the terrific breakfasts, for instance. The desk staff made a note of the issues, and I have no doubt they'll be dealt with.

Let's start with location. It doesn't get any better than this, at the foot of Princess Street, right on the water and steps from all the best restaurants and drinking establishments. Kingston has come a long way in the last 20 years and is a great place to visit, especially in summer. This hotel puts you right in the heart of the action.
The room was HI standard with two beds and a wide screen TV (Why do hotels install wide screen TVs but not inlcude digital service so you can actually watch shows in wide screen rather than distortovision. The washroom was a little dated and showing its age. The tub and sink were as rusty as a 72 Chevy. The big bonus was a great view of Lake Ontario with a sliding glass door that actually openned and a tiny balcony with two chairs. The room also had a fridge and a coffee maker. No nigh-speed wireless which was a pain.
Staff were friendly at both the front desk and restaurant. The restuarant/bar stocks 4 different Mill Street draughts a nice change from most chain hotels which think Bud and Coors Light are beer.
If you are going to KIngston it doesn't get any better than this at the price. By comparison the rate at the HI up on the highway was exactly the same and you would be kilometers from the action.

Having lived in Kingston for 4 years, I was always curious to the quality of this hotel.

It seems they may have done some upgrades recently, but we were quite surprised at its quality. Cozy beds with loads of pillows and the complimentary buffet which came with our government rate was a definite bonus!

Pet friendly & fortunately we got a ground-floor room that opened outside through patio doors. Easy access for the dog!

Great location for downtown access to shopping on Princess St, Arena and University and Hospitals.

Will definitely consider staying here next fall when we possibly return to Kingston.

Booked the hotel on Priceline so got a good price. Really like the location of this hotel. It's right on the water so has nice views and is within walking distance of everything. The hotel gym is pretty good with lots of cardio machines and a good assortment of weight machines and dumbbells (unusual in a hotel gym). There's a good pub with live music right beside the hotel called The Merchant. Overall, a good choice in Kingston.
