My family and I had dinner at the Babelfish Bistro on a Saturday evening to celebrate my son's birthday and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We all agreed that this was one of our best ever dining experiences including the decor, ambience, service, food quality and quantity, and value and would have no hesitation recommending this restaurant to our friends.
The restaurant is located right in the downtown core of Guelph and from the outside the restaurant is very inauspicious, blending into a rather bland streetscape but this is misleading. Inside, the decor is very warm and inviting, with tables well-spaced for privacy despite the small size of the restaurant. We were greeted immediately upon entering and shown to our table, and cold water with ice was provided without having to ask. Service was very organized, efficient and personable without being intrusive. Several dinner specials were posted on a chalkboard and the members of our group ordered from both the menu and the specials. For starters we tried the home-made tomato soup, spinach salad with a warm mushroom dressing, and goat cheese mixed greens salad. All were excellent and my daughter told the server her spinach salad was the best salad she has ever had. Our choices for main course included duck confit with fingerling potatoes (crisp skin, perfectly cooked, with a delicious cherry sauce), broiled salmon on a bed of rice, vegetarian Thai stir fry on rice, and escargot. All were delicious with generous but not inappropriately large servings. We also indulged in dessert, including chocolate cheese cake and New Orleans style bread pudding. Again everyone was delighted with their choices.
The restaurant is small so reservations are essential on weekends. The cost for five of us, including wine, tax and tip was $260.
