When you first sit down for dinner, you notice the absence of salt and pepper shakers on the tables. Once you partake of the many delights Chef Jean-Marc and Emilie prepare for you, you know why: finally, a restaurant that takes care to season and cook food properly. Add to that, the fact that virtually all the ingredients, from bacon smoked on site to condiments home canned, are prepared by Chef himself, and you have an unparalleled dining experience. Then there's the added bonus of the freshly-hand-made Saturday-morning croissants: once you have the fresh croissants from here, you'll never want grocery-store :croissants" again!

We recently had a great dinner at L'Auberge de France while attending the nearby Empire Theatre in Belleville. It is a small, intimate place, successfully evoking the ambience of an authentic French bistro. Chef Jean-Marc is happy to assist patrons with their menu choices and closely supervises the food preparation, some of which occurs within view of the diners. We had the coq au vin and thoroughly enjoyed it. Prices are not cheap, but they are fair, given the abundance of fresh, local offerings and the expertise with which they are prepared and presented. Though only open for dinner on Wed. through Sat., l'Auberge de France is also a bakery and gourmet shop, which operates during more extended hours. We did find the service slow, but as we were there with friends from out of town, we enjoyed the opportunity for conversation. If you are looking to enjoy a leisurely, tasty dinner in downtown Belleville , I can heartily recommend l'Auberge de France!

The food was tasty, the wine list was great - the service was painfully slow. We arrived at 6:15 pm (party of 6 people) and we left at 9:30 pm!

The waiter was friendly and polite but not as attentive as we would have liked. We also had to LOOK for the waiter and ASK for more wine every time we needed to order another glass. We were the first customers in - but the last ones served food: they processed all the smaller table's orders first (deuces & four-tops).

I brought my kids (ages 5 & 7), fortunately they are seasoned restaurant goers and were able to eat from the menu (my daughter ate two orders of escargot). But if you have kids who are fussy eaters I doubt you would find anything that they would care to eat. Not the restaurant's problem though! People have to stop giving their kids pop tarts & kraft dinner... egads.

We would go back again - but with a smaller group.

My wife and I have been several times for dinner and we have always enjoyed it. The food is very good and the prices reasonable for the quality. Pleased to recommend it.

The best Saturday morning croissants that you will find outside of Paris. Saturday mornings at L'Auberge have become tradition for my brother and I - but make sure to call in advance and reserve some under your name because they run out quickly! I visit regularly after classes for a soup and sandwich with friends and always enjoy it. If you're looking for something sweet, the chocolate-caramel tart is incredible! It's like a little piece of Paris in the middle of downtown Belleville. Who would have thought?
