This cafe does not just specialize in soup the dinner meals are wonderful. Enjoyed the salmon Wellington and the rubarb dessert was delicious.

“A welcome find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2013

This place has everything from salmon burgers to mushroom ravioli and everything we tried was good. There was also a selection of beer that we did not try and a number of desserts available. The staff is friendly. There is outdoor seating on the balcony and you can walk up from the parking lot or come in through the hall from the seat. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner with surprising variety and more than a few relatively healthy ingredients. After many lunches and dinners of fried food, this was a wonderful find in Pictou.

The restaurant itself is very small, with only a few tables. I am impressed with what they have been able to do here. We really hope they make it!

“Great prices and food”

I detoured to Pictou on my way to Cape Breton. The first thing I did was stop by the Hector reconstruction (a must see). I asked the young student where she likes to eat...and this was the place. I had a yummy grilled salmon burger and fabulouw fries..for 6.50 plus tax. Amazing!

“Surprisingly good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2013

Just above the touristy waterfront, normally the enclave of the 'tourist trap' eateries, lies this unpretentious gem, with the name alluding to the fable of the itinerant who ventures into a poor, starving village offering to make soup out of water and a stone he carries.

Of course, what he is able to do is bring out all the townfolk and their meagre ingredients, and puts them together so that all are fed. a lovely tale about cooperation as an antidote to hoarding.

The Stone Soup cafe creates a bit more elaborate fare, but mostly out of locally caught seafood. They are the first people to proudly proclaim they use frozen seafood- but defended that amply, saying fresh frozen is much better than less than fresh unfrozen.

The owner is laid back and casual- in a 'small world' moment, he revealed he had lived in BC, where we are from, and by the time we narrowed it down, we discovered he was good friends of our good friends.

But the approach to their food is not laid back at all.

I had the lobster bisque- heavenly, then snow crab- again, heavenly, and then something else, which I can't remember except that it was heavenly. My partner felt the same way about her choices.

What was remarkable was the sophistication of the food in a simple establishment- a reflection of their genuine commitment to their culinary arts. They do catering as well, and have a very good local reputation. The reputation is deserved.

“Surprising small-town eatery”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2012

I say 'surprising' as it's a small, almost out-of-the-way bistro-style mini-restaurant on Water (main) Street, Pictou, that many might otherwise miss. We've eaten there several times for breakfast (excellent), lunch and supper. Wonderful desserts. Great view of the harbor. Only problem in winter is that it can be chilly. Accessible from Water Street entrance but not via harbor side stairs.
