“Beautiful location, service, food not resort expectation”
Reviewed June 22, 2013

This beautiful location on the shores of the Northumberland Strait offers cozy rustic accomodations and more upscale cottages. The log structures take you back to days gone by when life was not as hectic or plugged in. Very relaxing. What is missing, the expected level of service and quality of food that is part of that resort experience. I recently spent several days at 'the lodge' and found there was an obvious lack of customer service at the check in desk and dining room, more of a sense of 'oh, you would like something?' The gorgeous view of the sea made for an enjoyable dining experience, the food not so much. Presentation lovely, lamb ordered medium, served well done, seafood chowder, cream with bits of seafood, the heavy cream overpowered any flavor of the seafood. At resort pricing I had expected a higher level of service and more enjoyable dining experience. That being said the property itself is very enjoyable and relaxing. Beds very comfortable and who wouldn't relax looking out over the calm waters.

Pictou Lodge has been in business since 1926 and the location is so wonderful right on the Northumberland Strait. The family stayed in a cabin in 1985 and we loved it. This time we (just my husband and I) thought we had booked a cabin but when we got there the cabins were being renovated so it was disappointing to be in the motel section. Had it been our honeymoon we would have been really disappointed as most of the accomodation is for families and retreats for large groups and not much romantic going on there.
Food wise - it used to be in Where to Eat in Canada, and although the fish cakes and lobster Benedict were lovely - the supper was a bit lackluster and tasteless. And being by the water, I was puzzled why there was only a choice of lobster or salmon for dinner and about 8 choices of beef. I also wondered what a vegetarian would do with the menu. Hmm. A bit extra oomph with spices would have made it more memorable as well - even some wasabi or horseradish in the mashed potatoes would have helped.
All that being said we still rate it as good and staff were wonderful. Thanks!

I attended a weekend retreat at the Pictou Lodge in the spring, which was wonderful. The facilities were good, the food better! and the staff excellent.
Loved the early morning walk on the beach, and the later evening sitting at the lookout with a glass of wine. The cottages looked wonderful, however I was in one of the rooms, which was average. No problems, but nothing outstanding either.
In the main lodge : loved the small bar and the fireplaces...very cozy for the evening.

Room Tip: Pick one of the oceanview rooms, or cottage.

We arrived on a beautiful summer day to lovely beachside resort!
The front desk staff were friendly and informed. They handed us the Bride & Groom to be arrival bags and directed us to our cottage!
Our cottage was clean and comfortable.
The dining room food was excellent!
The wedding setup was superb-overlooking the ocean!
Her wedding decorator did a super job of the dining room setup!!
Our wedding meal was tasty!
Then there was other activities (swimming, biking, etc.) available to get involved in before and after the wedding!
Just a super place with lovely weather and great facilities for the occasion!

We spent several days here. What a beautiful location overlooking Northumerland Strait towards Prince Edward Island. The Lodge is surrounded by cabins and cottages of various sizes and configurations; we had a three bedroom two bath - it was very spacious, comfortable and offered a full kitchen and all other amenities. The location cannot be beat - all cabins are facing the water and the beach is steps away. The town of Pictou is not far away; five minutes by car at the most and offers everything that you need from groceries to liquor to shopping. We had lunch and dinner here. In each case, the food was well prepared and tasty and service was efficient and pleasant. I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Stayed one night and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. It was quiet as the season was coming to an end but that didn't affect the friendly and attentive service. Our room in one of the older cabins was very comfortable and had all the facilities we wanted. The resort may be old but it has been well maintained and its history is one of its charms. The dinner and breakfast were very good with quality food and good service. The location overlooking the water is stunning. Would happily return.

10 members of the class of '69 held our nursing school reunion this past weekend at Pictou Lodge. It wasn't a significant year, but we had so much fun at our 40th reunion, that we wanted to get together again. Most came from Quebec and Ontario with one from BC. We had a fabulous time.
We rented 2 -3 bedroom cottages, complete with kitchens and cosy fireplaces. We enjoyed walking on the beach and seeing the eagles overhead.
Staff at the lodge were very helpful, bringing over a folding table and extra chairs to accomodate our Lobster boil, so we could all eat together at one cottage. We spent time in Pictou checking out the gift and yarn shops.
Pictou Lodge is a beautiful place and everyone agreed that the setting was perfect for us. Even the relentless rain couldn't dampen our spirits.

Room Tip: The older log cottages have a special ambiance and are great for groups.
