“Fantastic food”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

This was probably one of the best meals ever. All for a very reasonable price. The setting is very unique in an old building. Live music started at 8:00 before we left.

“Lovely and romantic”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

This place is a gem. The food was wonderful and the staff courteous and professional. Our waiter informed us that this is the second oldest building in Halifax. It just barely escaped the big explosion.Ask to be seated in the room with the fireplace, which is part of the original building.

“Eating well, way up north”

Press Gang. Halifax. Tuesday, August 6, 2013

We paused before trying Halifax, Nova Scotia’s venerable Press Gang. We thought it a hangout for unruly newspaper folk. But that’s not it. Press Gang’s building is very old, erected in 1759, which lends some veracity to myth or legend that it commemorates Halifax lads who in some earlier time, the war of 1812 or the American Revolution, could be conscripted--or pressed—into service with free drinks.
These days, few Army recruiters could afford Press Gang’s most celebrated beverages, its 100-some single malt Scotch whiskeys, which go for up to $135 a shot. Our own check, including wine but no whiskey, surpassed $200. To spend less, try teetotaling.
If you can still meet the Press Gang’s pricey thresholds, you have found a restaurant that ranks at the peak of Halifax’s best. For M.F.A. (My Favorite American) and me, the Press Gang’s overriding feature was all the other features that combine to define the restaurant’s ambience:
The interior brick and stone walls enclosing nooks like ours, the disks playing Cole Porter and Miles Davis, the warm, dramatic spotlighting, the bright and well-informed yet unobtrusive young woman serving us, and, yes, the very inspired cuisine.

“Amazing atmosphere and food”
Reviewed August 9, 2013

I walked by this place for years wondering why people talked about it so much. It doesn't look so impressive from the outside. I finally ate there and was blown away. Now I wonder why it doesn't get talked about more than it does.

The atmosphere is historic, romantic, elegant, etc. The food is creative and high end and delicious in every detail. Don't be thrown by the simple descriptions on the menu. It is sort of like the outside of the building, deceptively simple.

The price is, well, what you expect to pay at a restaurant of this caliber. Special occasion territory, but worth every penny.

“Pure class, a must see in halifax.”
Reviewed August 7, 2013 via mobile

This place takes you back to the days when a bar was a bar. The old stone walls and hard wood decor made this a memorable night. This is a place to not be missed.
