“Best sushi on the east coast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2011

This restaurant serves authentic Japanese cuisine that competes with any sushi I have eaten in Toronto, Vancouver or San Francisco. It is presented in typical Japanese fashion with great attention to detail and it is outstanding. I was devestated when the original restaurant on Spring Garden Road closed and was thrilled to find that they had reopened on Granville St. it is very reasonably priced considering the quality and the staff are friendly and helpful. Arigato!

“Spectacular - I go every week!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2011

I LOVE Shige. My husband and I eat supper there at least once a week.

The food is always fresh and large. Shige's mantra seems to be "fresh, simple, delicious".

Shige himself never fails to greet you when you come into the restaurant and bid you farewell as you leave. It is obvious that he greatly appreciates your patronage.

Judging by the number of Japanese people who eat here, it is very traditional cuisine. I cannot understand why Hamachi House wins best sushi in Halifax year after year. I have eaten at Shige, Hamachi, Nami, and Doraku, and I prefer Shige by leaps and bounds.

Note to first time visitors: if you are one of those people who like to gorge themselves on huge pieces of Americanized maki with crazy sauce and cheeses, this isn't the place for you.

Come to Sushi Shige! You won't be disappointed.

“Best sashimi on the East Coast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2011

Fantastic little restaurant. If you love raw fish, just let Shige create a meal for you. Fish is always fresh and service is friendly. Occasionally you have to wait but Shige is the only one who prepares the sashimi and sushi. Always worth the wait

“Decent sushi, decent udon, slow service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2011

The sushi was nice, although cut too large for my liking. I also had the shrimp tempura udon and the broth was tasty, but I only got 2 pieces of tempura which I think is a downsize from the last time I was there in Oct 2010. Service was slow.

“Among top sushi anywhere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2011

I had several outstanding sushi meals at Shige. Yesterday, I asked for a $40 "omakase" menu (chef choice), specifying that I preferred quality over quantity. We got 12 different pieces of nigiri sushi, all with the fish piece much bigger than the small rice ball, and 6 maki. Nearly all the pieces were excellent. There was enough food for two (we regretted ordering a tempura plate and left some behind).

I had the privilege of eating many excellent sushi meals on the West coast and in Japan and Shige ranks among the best (at a third of the price of the equivalent meal in Japan). Probably due to lack of availability, Shige can have an "off day" when his sushi is merely very good... but even then, it is worth the detour.
