Service was excellent, the featured specials (steak and halibut) were exceptional and you could tell there was a generous shot of liquor in the Monte Cristo coffee. We made a reservation 2 hours in advance for 5:45 on a Friday night. The restaurant was empty. One hour later it was full so making a reservation may be prudent.

Service, food was good. Couldn't get past the glaring light emanating from the kitchen though. I had to sit with my back to it. Too bad, it is distracting if you sit facing the kitchen. The Niçoise salad was very good - I ordered dressing on the side and my partner had the hot pot - sweet pea soup with coconut milk and cilantro. The soup had an acid added, probably lime or lemon juice which was a tad too much. Mains: risotto with lobster with asparagus tips which was good and Jono had seared scallops with thick sliced bacon and fried large ravioli stuffed with spinach and ricotta. The ravioli did not need deep frying - it took away from the delicacy of the scallops - it would have been fine done traditionally. The bacon would have been better had it had a lightly smoked flavour.

Food was very good. Wine list was the best we found in the Maritimes. Service was a bit sporadic, but could have been due to the large table that was situated behind us. Would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone visiting Halifax!

I spent 2 weeks in Halifax visiting with family during which time we went to many restaurants. Chives was by far the most favorite meal for everyone. The quality of food was an out of this world experience that melted in your mouth. The entrance to the restaurant displays a wall of culinary chef awards, medals, and certificates. The presentation of food was excellent and the culinary expertise of chefs was outstanding!

Wonderful evening, great meal & service. Chives offered a great menu & timing of the whole evening allowed for a great night before heading for the US.
