My wife and I stayed at The Verandah B&B two nights in early September, 2005. The house has good 'bones' but shows signs of neglect such as missing window screens, windows that slammed shut like a guillotine when opened, general need of paint and cleaning, etc. It is also in a neighborhood that appears to be mostly rented out to students and there was quite a bit of noise and activity late into the night. Although the owner had assured me via email that we had a private bath, there were in fact two rooms on our floor and only one bath down the hall. The towels had a strange odor, almost like urine. Despite these problems, our stay could have been okay but for a bizarre incident with the owner. She was not at home when we arrived in mid-afternoon, we found her instructions about which room to use, time for breakfast, etc., in a note taped to the door. We finally met her at breakfast the next morning, and were somewhat taken aback by her choice of subjects for conversation. She complained bitterly about the other couple who had arrived the previous night but chose not to stay (we realized later they were apparently more intuitive than we were), and the fellow in the room next to ours who was always late for breakfast. She had negative things to say about previous guests as well, this theme of "terrible guests" was the only line of conversation from her that morning. Little did we realize we would become her next story.
Later that day she told me I would have to pay the balance for our room in cash (she had billed our credit card for 1/2 when we made the reservation) because 'her machine was broken'. When I offered that she could take my credit card number and charge it when her machine was repaired, her story changed to 'all her accounts were closed'. When I tried to tell her I had only enough cash for minimal expenses and had planned to pay her with credit she insisted I go to a bank or ATM to get cash to pay her. At that point her demeanor changed dramatically and she started screaming at me (my wife could hear her from upstairs through a closed door) that I was trying to cheat her, she hated all Americans, etc., etc., etc. Her behavior was really quite frightening. Since it was late evening and we didn't know the city or where we could find other lodging, we went ahead and paid her the cash. We slept not at all well, with the door locked and one eye open, and chose to leave early the next morning without eating her food.
