We were visiting Halifax for the first time and noticed Cafe Istanbul while walking to a recommended Coffee Shop further up on Spring Garden->Coburg Rd. Once we checked out the coffee shop, we decided not to stay, and returned to this restaurant. We're very glad we did. The dining room is friendly and casual, the hostess Idil is delightful and competent, and her husband the chef is an artist with flavors. The menu is varied, with vegetarian options in each category. We especially enjoyed the red lentil soup (pureed, with a fabulous and unfamiliar taste), the turkish rice, the bulghur pilaf, and the rosewater rice pudding. We were in Halifax for 4 nights, and we chose to return here a second time before leaving. That experience was as good as the first one. They also have nice seating outside on the sidewalk.

We have been to this restaurant numerous times as my daughter is a student at Kings. The food is reasonably priced and delicious. The rice is magnificent. The kebobs are tasty as are the lamb chops. Did I mention the rice? Try the Haloumi as an appetizer.

I have had two "business" lunches at this establishment and each was excellent, the lentil kafta wrap and the grilled haloumi wrap were superb. The starter hummus is highly recommended.
