The Lord Nelson is a standout in Halifax. Great location within walking distance of everything downtown and directly across from the public gardens. We opted for one of the "executive" rooms and were very pleased with the decor and amenities. My only regret is that the hotel room did not have a shoe horn. Regardless, I'd stay hear again in a minute.

Room Tip: Pay a touch more for an executive room.

Beautiful rooms; large spacious, lots of storage space, small kitchenette, but OMG, the bathroom was so small you had to exit to turnaround. You could wash your feet in the tub; wash your hands in the sink; and do your business on the toilet all at the same time. How convenient. The room was about 22x 17; why not make that bathroom big enough for one. Loved everything else about the place. The complimentary breakfast was one of the best I have seen in a long time. Nothing hot but that was fine for me. One other thing, do not take a $200 a night room next to three elevators and vending machines/ice machine. Yes, I would go back, but would be more specific on the room that I wanted. The view of the Halifax Public Gardens was spectacular - rhododendron season.

My stay was part business and part pleasure. The Lord Nelson could not have been more accommodating. Boutique room was spacious with a comfortable chair and a good reading lamp. Great bed and solid "historic" construction of the building meant it was very quiet. The location is excellent and staff friendly and helpful. Will definitely stay there next time.

Great Hotel. Attended a conference in June. Opted for their "petite" room at a bargain price compared to others in the city. Room was clean and comfortable, double bed, desk, armchair, wide screen TV and free wifi. Bathroom was very small but for one person was quite adequate. Across the street from the Halifax Gardens and about a 10 minute walk to the waterfront. Friendly and accommodating staff and a guest laundry room that I did not have occasion to use.
Many restaurants and other services around the corner on Spring Garden Road.

Those unfamiliar with Halifax should note that the airport is well inland and a $60 cab ride. However there is city bus service from the airport at a well signposted stop - $3.50 and takes about 50 minutes to downtown because of intermediate stops. Every half hour weekdays and hourly on weekends. Schedule can be accessed from the airport website under Ground Transportation.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel look out on the gardens across the street. Recommend an upper floor on that side. I was on the 7th floor and street noise at night was minimal.

Halifax has a nice range of hotels throughout the city centre. The Lord Nelson is one of these, located on a prime downtown corner, which makes it very walkable to most downtown attractions and shopping areas.

The hotel itself is old and as such has limitations based on its original design. The updates that have been done are top quality, and the Lord Nelson feels quite fresh given its age, but nonetheless, the design, layout, and sizing all limit it from becoming more than a great 3 - 4 star hotel, depending on how you rate it.

Recommended for its location, professional staff, and well-maintained and clean rooms. You can't go wrong with the Lord Nelson, but don't expect a modern feel.

+'s:

~ Super location downtown
~ Professional and attentive staff
~ Rooms are modernized with most amenities
~ Very clean rooms and the whole building in general.
~ Well maintained rooms and the whole building in general.
~ Elevators have an authentic and delightful retro feel
~ Good restaurant/pub
~ Free and good internet service.

-'s:

~ Small rooms (result of 100+ year old design)
~ Electrical outlets are few and far between. Again, an age issue.
~ Rooms have all "cold" temperate CFC bulbs throughout, including the bathroom. If you like that modern look with cold white-light, no problem. But my room constantly felt cold as a result of the lighting. I like a "warm" light room, and especially the bathroom.
~ No pool
~ Lobby is an older design with no clear gathering and socializing area. You don't feel like there is a central heart to the main floor. You are either on your way up to your room or on the way out.

Special Treat:

Go out the hotel's front door, cross the street and enter the lovely public gardens. A real treat to have the beautiful gardens right at the hotel's doorstep.

Room Tip: Some rooms face the public gardens and others the "inside". The inside is quieter as it faces off the road, but the front rooms have a nice view and are a bit noisier as they are on the street. Also, the higher floor you are on, are the quieter it gets...
