“Great Location in Halifax”
Reviewed May 23, 2012

This is a great old world charming hotel. Fantastic location with access to wonderful restaurants and all that down town Halifax has to offer. We had a 2 day conference with round tables in the meeting rooms and ball rooms as well as breakfast, lunch and suppers. It was a great location for a meeting!

Room Tip: a view of the harbour and Pier 21at the back of the hotel would be great.

Our heritage hotel is in the perfect location in downtown Halifax, close to great restaurants, shops and entertainment. We appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback with us and we look forward to welcoming you back to Halifax again soon.

The Westin Hotel is the former CN Hotel in Halifax NS. As a result some parts of the Hotel are a bit older. We had a room in the older part of the Hotel. While the room was a reasonable size, it only had one chair for 2 guests, and that chair was more of an office chair rather than an easy chair. The room had a very large walk in closet, however the only way to keep the light on was to prop the closet door open with something, a tad inconvenient. Washroom was redone and was quiet nice. Unfortunately, WIFI is only free in the lobby. Why 4 star hotels charge for WIFI is beyond me. The lobby is very nice, the front desk staff, doorman etc are all very helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the newer part, and one with easy chairs.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Our heritage hotel is one of the original railway hotels in Canada and is over 81 years old. Due to the history of our hotel, some of the rooms are smaller than others; we are sorry you experienced a smaller room.

As for the wireless internet, we do price shop the city regularly and find our prices comparable to other downtown Halifax hotels. We are pleased to hear that you received welcoming and friendly service from all of our staff at the Westin. We look forward to seeing you again soon at our seaport hotel.

This was my third stay at the Westin Nova Scotian and again I enjoyed it very much. The hotel is clean, quiet and the staff very professional. Arriving after a long flight we received a very friendly welcome. Rooms are modernly equipped, well serviced and our room offered a nice view of the bay. The breakfast buffet is a real highlight with a great selection of fresh and delicious food, excellent service and a relaxed atmosphere. The pool area on the ground floor is clean and also offers a hot tub of reasonable size and temperature. Both were accessible as early as 6 am. You only need to bring your room key to open the door. Next to the pool there is a fitness room whith all kinds of modern torture instruments some people seem to enjoy. The hotel also offers a spa but so far I have not used it.
The only negative point during our stay was that our in-room safe did not work. I gave notice to the reception but nothing happend. I would have expected the battery to be changed quickly as this is usually the problem and one can fix it very easily. Anyway, as this hotel is obviously a safe place with honest people being around we did not loose anything. The hotel is ideally located next to the VIA rail station and closed to the waterfront, the cruise ship terminal, the farmer's market and the immigration museum at Pier 21. If you are in need of something you can easily get it (if not from the hotel stuff) at the Atlantic Superstore a few steps from the hotel entrance.
Again I made use of the Thrifty car rental service which is operating a counter right in the lobby and which is very reliable.
For my next visit in Halifax the Westin will be my first choice.

The hotel is beautiful from the outside. The staff is very friendly, especially the valets. (You can self-park also). The valet took the time to show me on a map where I needed to go, and gave me a guidebook.
My room was small and awkward. Tiny closet. Had a nice harbour view. It's close to the touristy area, but not in the heart of it.
It is a nice hotel I would recommend it for people who need to stay in downtown.

We stayed 3 nights with the Westin, 14th to 17th May and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We came off the train from Montreal, how nice to stay undercover and just walk a few meters to the lobby of the Hotel. Checking in was fast and efficient, Sophie was excellent, helpful and friendly. Our room was spacious, overlooking the Harbour, quiet, super clean. The bed was so comfortable, everything was great. The hotel was so close to the city and we walked all over the place, very easy to get around. One of the staff told us where a launderette was, we had a lot of washing after coming off an 8 day coach trip around Eastern Canada, the laundry was only a couple of blocks away so it worked out well.
A lovely touch getting cheese, fruit and crackers delivered to our room to welcome us, a pleasant touch, thank you Ashley and the Westin.
We would not hesitate recommending this hotel, great with free wifi too.

Room Tip: Apparently a corner room is good, we were unable to get one but more than happy with ours on the 5tt...

My partner and I are from Halifax, and for his birthday we planned a relaxing Stay-Cation. We booked online, what was supposed to be a Harbourview room with complimentary breakfast. When we arrived, we were told our room was not available, and instead of a romantic Harbourview like we expected, we were put on the opposite side of the building in the only room that was available- a 2nd floor workout room with a view of the driveway and the park. Nothing says romance like a huge treadmill in your room!

To compensate for their error, we were given a $50 room service credit. The food took a very long time, which can be expected when they are busy- which they were; my food, part of their all-day breakfast, was soggy and unpleasant, and my partner's burger was burnt on the outside and questionably cooked on the inside.

The shower did not drain properly, so we were showering in water above our ankles. The room was very dark when we entered because the curtains were closed. We had to stumble through the darkness to find a side table lamp, as there wasn't any light attached to a switch in the room.

Needless to say, I will not be returning. We were so disappointed with our stay that we skipped breakfast altogether at the hotel and went out to a local restaurant instead. Had I known this was going to happen, I would have booked at another hotel in a heartbeat, and the next time we decide to have a stay-cation, it will not involve the Westin Nova Scotian.

It's unfortunate, because I was looking forward to staying at this hotel.

Room Tip: Call ahead if you book online to make sure you get the room you paid for!

As a business traveller for close to 10 years, I can honestly say that I have never had a more pleasant hotel experience than at the Westin Nova Scotian. What sets a great hotel apart from a good one is quite simply the level of service. And the Westin NS is world class. Take it from a traveller who has stayed at most of the major hotels in this city
.
Not only are the rooms clean, well-appointed and comfortable with killer views of the harbour, but the whole team go the extra mile to make your stay a memorable one. They treat you like a friend and not just another hotel reservation number. Little things that are taken for granted by large chains are not overlooked here: great housekeeping services, extra amenities when you need them, prompt and courteous room service and accommodating in-house reservations even when they're at their busiest. And I can't remember the last time I spotted security doing the rounds in the hallways just to be sure that guests were safe and sound. My hat’s off to all of you.

The Elements restaurant in the lobby is a must-try. I usually stay away from hotel restaurants because of poor quality over-priced food but place has an incredible chef (Brian) and a menu that rivals the local hotspots with only fresh, local ingredients.
Speaking of conveniences, the hotel is next door to a Via Rail station and bus depot. There is a grocery store one block away as well as restaurants and the boardwalk. It doesn’t get any better.
There are too many names to list but I would like to thank the folks at the front desk and the bell staff for always greeting us with warm smiles and being attentive to our special requests. Roy, the bartender, made the lounge an inviting place to meet up with other guests and enjoy expertly prepared cocktails. And if you need a ride to any place in town and you want to get there in style, just ask for Eli's car service at the front desk; always accommodating on even the shortest notice - true service with a smile.

And avery special thanks goes out to James who consistently went out of his way to make sure we were taken care of. My girlfriend had flown in town for a weekend and he made us both feel like rock stars by taking the time to know more about us and setting us up with the best Halifax had to offer! If you're planning a visit here, do yourself a favour and don't spoil your travels with a mediocre hotel. Go with a sure bet and book your stay with the best in town.

Room Tip: Ask for a harbour view room, if available.
