Owner description: Experience an exciting part of Canada's history by visiting this 19th-century fort with a sweeping view of downtown Halifax. Between May and October, the Citadel is brought to life by two historic regiments of the British Army - the pageantry of the 78th Highlanders and the precision of the Royal Artillery thrill visitors daily with live re-enactments. The skirl of the bagpipes mixes with the crack of a rifle and the assembly of recruits for the next foot drill. There's no shortage of authentic experiences to view and participate in! Kids will love the Xplorers Program - an activity book just for them. When the sun sets, it's time to experience the other side of the Citadel - join the Citadel Ghost Walk and experience the dark and errie lore from the early 1800's. Tours start mid-July and run every Friday and Saturday nights starting at 8:30pm until the end of October. Cash at the front gate.

“Like travelling through time”
Reviewed September 22, 2013

Lots of visitors come and go, but the place is big enough that you don't feel crowded while walking around. Picturesque views of the city and interesting exhibits about its history. We appreciated the folks in period costume, including a bagpiper!

“Big, Bold, Brave time Fort, and a hike.”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

If you cant hike uphill, I suggest you get a ride up and get dropped off,its a good climb up the hill. OK, now the Citadel, very clean, well preserved, very friendly people working there, and the guards are in training, so they can talk to you and smile a little. There is a firing the cannon at noon, which can be heard at the water front boardwalk easily, gun fire on the grounds every once in while and a bag piper too. What more could you ask for in a Citadel. Remember to take your parks pass as it gets you in free. If you see more than a couple of the Parks Canada sites, the pass is well worth it.

“An interesting historical experience”
Reviewed September 18, 2013

We spent several hours at the Citadel because there is so much to take in. We arrived in time for the firing of the Noonday gun which was well enacted by the young volunteers. The site is in first class order & was never attacked. We walked around the battlements & enjoyed the great views over the water. There is a 48 minute film show giving you an insight into the history of Halifax. The film starts every 15minutes. You go into the theatre for part one then move into theatres
2, 3 & 4 as the story unfolds. It is very well thought out. There are re enactments on special days. It was a delight to hear the bagpipes & played so well. we did not go on the tour but it did look very interesting & there was an attentive audience. The staff are very friendly, welcoming & willing to answer questions making the whole experience come alive. Enjoy!

“A fortress made so strong that it was never attacked!”
Reviewed September 16, 2013

Enjoyed our visit very much. The enactments, costumes and the docents made the experience memorable. The bagpipes were echoing memories of the historic past.

“Historic Place and Beautiful View”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

This is a very beautiful site and is the highest point in Halifax. You can see for miles in any direction. It is also a very historic place as well. Great location for picture taking as you can see over the entire bay area as well as the Dartmouth area. We didn't stay long at this attraction, but if you really want to see everything there you could easily spend 2 hours doing so.
