Owner description: Experience an exciting part of Canada's history by visiting this 19th-century fort with a sweeping view of downtown Halifax. Between May and October, the Citadel is brought to life by two historic regiments of the British Army - the pageantry of the 78th Highlanders and the precision of the Royal Artillery thrill visitors daily with live re-enactments. The skirl of the bagpipes mixes with the crack of a rifle and the assembly of recruits for the next foot drill. There's no shortage of authentic experiences to view and participate in! Kids will love the Xplorers Program - an activity book just for them. When the sun sets, it's time to experience the other side of the Citadel - join the Citadel Ghost Walk and experience the dark and errie lore from the early 1800's. Tours start mid-July and run every Friday and Saturday nights starting at 8:30pm until the end of October. Cash at the front gate.

If you want to have the citadel all to yourself, go on a rainy day! Except for one slightly sodden school group, there were few people there, so it was easy to walk around the ramparts, read all the signage and explore the rooms. As well, the guides had lots of time to chat. Very interesting and especially enjoyed the modern exhibit on the history of the Canadian Army.

The first hill to climb just to get inside was a killer!! My daughter just had knee surgery (2weeks prior) so it was a trek for her. The facility was interesting for the attire and the ability to try on some of the period pieces. The tunnels under the walls were fun to go into. Great views of the city from the top.

A living history museum but compared to most, these characters did not stay in character very well. Still quite worth the visit as there is much to see and learn about the military and political history of Nova Scotia. We planned to stay 1-2 hours and actually stayed longer. A Halifax tradition is the firing of the canon at noon from the CItadel..
