Owner description: Experience an exciting part of Canada's history by visiting this 19th-century fort with a sweeping view of downtown Halifax. Between May and October, the Citadel is brought to life by two historic regiments of the British Army - the pageantry of the 78th Highlanders and the precision of the Royal Artillery thrill visitors daily with live re-enactments. The skirl of the bagpipes mixes with the crack of a rifle and the assembly of recruits for the next foot drill. There's no shortage of authentic experiences to view and participate in! Kids will love the Xplorers Program - an activity book just for them. When the sun sets, it's time to experience the other side of the Citadel - join the Citadel Ghost Walk and experience the dark and errie lore from the early 1800's. Tours start mid-July and run every Friday and Saturday nights starting at 8:30pm until the end of October. Cash at the front gate.

“Pretty cool”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

The Citadel Historic site is fairly interesting. Amazing views of the city from this hilltop fortress. You can't see the Citadel from street level since it's built into a hilltop, but once you brave the little climb up the hill past the city clock, you'll step inside of a walled fortress complete with ceremonial guards in period costume. Be forewarned, the noonday cannon goes off at 12:00 on the dot! Local giggle as tourists jump.

“very well done”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

There is lots to see so allow plenty of time. Be sure to take a free guided tour. The 15-minute introductory film at the VC is interesting but the 45-minute version is a bit dry to sit through (and we are history buffs). Be sure to talk to the costumed guides throughout the park as they are well-informed.

“Built to keep out the invasion of the "Yanks" in the south!”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

Beautiful views and a terrific place filled with history! The guide said it was built to keep the invading United States forces out. Now they are spending millions to bring United States Visitors to Canada. If you study the War of 1812, you will know what that meant!!

“Interesting visit”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

We took some guests from England. We had a very knowlegeable tour guide who took us round the various rooms and made the tour very interesting. The Citadel is very well restored and you can imagine life there years ago. Well worth a visit. Best on a sunny day when the cruise ships are not visiting!!

“Take a Guided Tour”
Reviewed January 31, 2013

The Citadel is an important part of Halifax's history. We were a bit confused as to where the entrance was. It sits high on a hill overlooking Halifax. You can walk along the walls that have cannons and look inside the barracks. There are men in kilts who play the bagpipes. However, I must say that we didn't get that excited about it. Perhaps if you go on a guided tour, it would be more interesting. We did not go on one and it was a bit boring to us and we were ready to go in 45 minutes.
