“It's usually good but wasn't impressed this time”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2013

My mom and I had dinner there a few nights ago. The service was very slow although very friendly. My panfried haddock was dry and my carrots were soggy. The fries were good. I usually enjoy the food there but not this time and the server was very slow.

“Consistantly Good Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2013

I live in Halifax and have found The Esquire to be one of the consistantly better food establishments in the city. It is not for the individual looking for the trendy "hot and spicy" menu but for anyone who likes a clean place, well run, friendly servers and good diner food. They have excellent breakfasts and daily specials for supper. I can truly say I have never been disappointed. Their chowders are THICK and full of seafood, sandwiches and burgers are well put together and I especially love their pan fried haddock... always fresh. They do a nice job on the seafood casserole, too, although I did need to add salt but that is a good thing. Better than it coming too salty and you can't do anything about it!! Lovely homemade desserts. All in all, a wonderful experience for a family restaurant that serves great comfort food. Try them. You won't be disappointed. There is parking on both sides of the restaurant, too. Be prepared for a short wait if you arrive at peak time.

“Busy Restaurant!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2013

Having lived here for many years, we had never visited the famous Esquire Restaurant as it is always too busy so we just passed by to go somewhere else...

We finally decided to stop in two weeks ago and we returned again last week! It is larger inside than I had expected and can seat a fair amount of people.

On our first visit, we had roast beef sandwiches, these were very good! Service was not very friendly at all and the waitress was not interested in answering questions about menu items.

Second visit - the hostess who seated us told us that the special was turkey dinner - 2 for $17.49. We ordered the turkey, this was incorrect, as it was actually $11.99 each. The meals were okay, but our server appeared to be either a new employee or stressed so it wasn't the best experience.

They have a great menu selection of home cooked foods, I love home cooked vegetables at restaurants!

We plan to return again soon as I would like to try the tuna melt or the haddock dinner which looks delicious. Hopefully there will be service with a smile this time! Third time is a charm maybe?

Overall I would recommend giving them a try - they have a good menu, good location, reasonable prices and this restaurant is very popular, everyone loves it! It is a far better choice than the classic "chicken" place further down the Bedford Highway.

“Classic North American Diner with Seafood Twist”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013

Locals recommended this to us and with a full parking lot and busy tables, locals like the place. Its either dated or deliberately dated and is right out of the 50's diner era. The crispy chicken sandwich is a giant patty served hamburger style with a slice of cheese on an oversize bun. The lobster roll is the meat from about one lobster served on a grilled bun. The lobster chowder is made with cream and thick, so thick you could probably stand your spoon up in the bowl but I didn't think to try until my bowl was empty. I might have to say I prefer a little lighter chowder. For desert the homemade strawberry shortcakes were four inches tall. We saw others enjoying classic comfort foods where the gravy comes in a pitcher. I hope they never change. If you long for the food you think you remember your mother made, this place is for you.
