I work in the downtown Halifax area, surrounded by tourist-priced restaurants. Anna's cafe is my regular place for a pick-up breakfast and for quick lunch...her fabulous homemade Chili with a toasted cheese bun or her great, fresh daily soups with a (huge) half-sandwich. Days when I'm really hungry, I splurge a whole $6.99 for the Lebanese plate, which is far more food than most of us could ever eat - and everything single item is made by Anna to her exacting standards. If you see an item that comes with a salad, count on the kind of salad you'd make for yourself...a generous portion, fresh and interesting. I cannot recommend Anna's highly enough.
Not only is the food wonderful, but Anna and her husband Sam make you feel like family.

Anna's Cafe is a cheerfull place on Hollis Street near the corner of Duke Street in downtown Halifax.

We decided to give Anna's a try when our regular restaurant was full-- it's turned out to be a really good decision.

The breakfast menu has a reasonable selection (standard bacon & eggs, french toast, omelets, etc.) and is less expensive than most local restaurants ($3.99 Cdn, Fall 2008).

Anna's bread is the first clue that she know's her stuff. At such a reasonable price for breakfast, I was expecting standard store bought bread. What a surprise-- it's locally baked by a French (now Canadian) baker who apprenticed in France. It's real bread with real texture to it-- not spongy North American commercial bread.

The coffee is good, satisfying coffee-- not outstanding, over-the-top coffee, but again, you're not paying an over-the-top price. The same goes for the rest of the ingredients and breakfast items. It appears that she's got her eye on the best quality for her diners that her margins allow.

Speaking with Anna after breakfast, she has a quiet confidence about her way of running a restaurant and building a clientele base. I like her restaurant because she's thoughtful about food, quality of food, and quality of service. Anna's European food sensibilities and clear vision are refreshing.

All combined, Anna's is an excellent value.
