“Smelly Rooms”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2013

The pictures of the rooms are not accurate. We have stayed multiple times and each time was worse then the last. The rooms are outdated yes but for the price we paid that would be expected. The first time we stayed the smell of must was overpowering when checking in. The other times we stayed all you could smell was cigarette smoke. There were cigarette holes in the blanket and pubic hair in the bathroom. You can't sit up in bed to watch tv or read because there are huge lamps attached to the headboard. The good parts of the hotel were that the customer service was good and there was parking available.

Room Tip: Ground floor is non smoking.

I booked the coastal inn through a third party website, and after checking out the site, wasn't sure what I got myself into! But it ended up being a pleasant place to stay. You can't let the old decor deter you. The staff was friendly and the rooms were perfectly fine. I enjoyed having the kitchenette in the room so you have the option to cook instead of always eating out. Breakfast was basic but good enough. Great value for as low price among hotel rooms that seem to keep getting higher!

The Coastal Inn Dartmouth across the bay from Downtown Halifax is a very cost effective alternative to staying in Halifax itself.

It is also very handy to the cross bay ferry (only $2.25 per adult one way and a 12 minute trip) to Halifax waterfront which basically deposits you in the centre of town.

There are eateries on the Dartmouth side that are reasonably handy and a good Irish pub just across from the Dartmouth ferry terminal. Also close to the cross bay bridges (car toll $1 one way).

Laundry facilities also available and a fairly good self service breakfast in the breakfast bar (open from 6 to 10 am) each morning.

Rooms are great too (and l probably should disclose that we were upgraded to a King bed room at no extra cost) so l have good reason to give a good review.

Even had cooking facilities and a fridge in room (don't know if theses facilities are standard).

Cannot fault the Coastal Inn. Well worth the stay.

This hotel is about 25 years old but has been updated and is comfortable. Located on Windmill road close to the bridges you can reach anywhere in Metro in 15 minutes. The continental breakfast is adequate.

Room Tip: 3d floor-there's an elevator

While this wasn't our first choice when we started looking for places to stay in Dartmouth, we were pleasantly surprised with the hotel and our room. We ended up with a suite on the 3rd floor which had two rooms (a living area) and a bedroom area. We felt the cost was reasonable. Our room had a little kitchenette with fridge, stove and microwave. This would probably be a good home base for someone staying in Dartmouth/Halifax for a bit longer periods of time as you can store and prepare your own food in your room. The suite does have a foldway bed in the couch, but it wasn't comfortable (are they ever?). The fixtures and appliances were a bit dated, but functional and in good shape. The continental breakfast was sufficient, with cereals, toast, bagels, coffee, tea, juices, milk, and fruit. There is a sit down breakfast area which was nice.

We booked at the Coastal at the VERY last minute on a budget and were pleasantly surprised at what we found. The hotel has more of a European feel than the major North American chain hotels, so those who are averse to slightly older fixtures may be turned off. However, the bed and pillows were extremely comfortable, the staff is beyond helpful, and getting in and out of Halifax is convenient via either the MacDonald or MacKay Bridges is a breeze.

The rooms are very large and the Continental breakfast is sufficient to the needs of a busy traveler. Most importantly, the manager insisted that we see Peggy's Cove before heading out of NS -- a definitely beautiful close to our wonderful stay in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for a third floor with a view of the water.

Coast Inn would be my stopping point while visiting Shearwater Aviation Museum and Atlantic Canada Aviation Museum.

This facility is three stories, with elevator. Cheching in was mae smooth and quick by both the man and woman at the front desk. Both ended up being helpful.

I found my room clean, spacious with a full kitchenette. A small stove, refrigerator, sink and dishes. Micowave. The large bed was very comfortable. Room also has a small kitchen table, chairs and va small couch. Over all, staying here would be one of the most enjoyable motels during a nine day trip.

My arrival time was 7:00 PM, but Nova Scotia is one hour ahead in time. By the time I was checked in and unpacked, it was 8:30 and a nearby restaurant was needed. The man suggested the Ship Victory seafood restaurant. By thus time , Ship Victory was closed for the day, so dined at a Chinese restasurant.

When my c-phone service wouldn't work in Dartmouth, the woman allowed me to make a quick call on her c-phone. The suggestion of the Ship Victory and c-phone call were the helpful part of the staff.

The bathroom has a shower/bathtub combination, with hair dryer. also a coffee maker. In the basement is a full service coin laundry. A fax and photocopying service is available. Parking is in front and along a side. Front parking can be a bit tight on one end.

The second day I was able to check out the Ship Victory. Excellent food. My choise was the seafood platter. Prices very reasonable.

The breakfast area is good size, with breakfast starting at 6:00. Dry cereal, donut/muffins, apple/orange juice, coffee. A guset needs to to arrive early, as the area will fill up fast.

One feature of this facility are the windows yhat crank open. A breath of fresh air felt good. In the closetspace are an iron/ironing board. Rooms are cleaned daily.

Pets are not allowed.

For the price, location, accommodations, spaciousness and friendly, helpful staff, I would stay again. However since my distance fron home is great, that won't happen. I would recommend this facility for other travelers in seach of Dartmouth lodging.

Jack L., Syracuse, New York.
