“It's at the end of the Earth, and worth going to!”
Reviewed August 29, 2012

Bay St Lawrence feels like the end of the Earth, and it is some way off the Cabot Trail, which is probably the main reason people come here. Meat Cove is another 16km from Bay St Lawrence, the last 8km on a gravel road, but my goodness is it worth making the effort! There are excellent well-marked trails through the forest, and stupendous coastal scenery. What's more, after a good few hours' hiking, there is a cafe back at Meat Cove: the chowder that we had there was lip-smacking.

Make sure you've got insect repellant though!

“WORTH THE TRIP”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

A nice drive with windy roads and great scenery. Not to far off the main roads. Nice place to view the ocean and walk on the beach. Worth the trip. Would recommend.

“Great area!”
Reviewed August 16, 2012

We spent a day touring Meat Cove and were in awe of the views we saw! We decided to do a hike up the Cape St. Lawrence Trail. This was a 5km hike up the mountain in each direction. The trails were decent, and although there was a fair bit of uphill climbing, it was worth it. The end location gives spectacular ocean views from a beautiful natural meadow and makes it well worth it! Amazing to meet a horse midway through our hike, and see some more grazing out in the meadow overlooking the ocean. There's a number of other trails to try besides this one, and they are a bit less challenging.

“Long drive for the hype.”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

Better plan is to stop at Black Point, about 3-5 km before Meat Cove if you want the view. We got there for sunrise, watched a couple of whale pods off the point & got some good pictures with the sun coming up.

“Stunning”
Reviewed August 4, 2012

This is so worth the drive! You won't be disappointed. This place is remote and beautiful. Our tents were right at the cliff edge. In the morning we watched a most incredible sunrise right from the tent. In the late afternoons hundreds if not thousands of Gannets put on a display of feeding on schools of mackerel, diving in the water until it was boiling. And that all a few hundred yards out from the picnicking table. We didn't see whales but that apparently is quite common there.
Now the campground amenities are not great. The bathrooms do have flush toilets and warm showers but are not so clean and toilet paper seems to be something you need to provide yourself. There are only a few truly level sites. But in my opinion he natural beauty of the site makes that all not very important. The camp host is very friendly. It didn't fill up completely but I recommend to arrive early to ensure a site. The most amazing site is on a rock that juts out from the cliff and can be reached via a narrow path with steep drop offs on either side. Not for people with vertigo but really spectacular.
It is remote and it can be windy and rainy up there. In Aug 2010, a rainstorm washed out a bridge and isolated the campground and the small 10-house community. People were evacuated by fishing boat from the small beach. You can find the old articles on the Internet. It can be an adventure up there but the scenery is breathtaking.
