We did the whole trail and our kids were exhausted (to be honest, we were too!!!) There are two ways to go (which we didn't know at the beginning, and there is no real way to undo which path you choose once it has been chosen). If you don't want to hike for 3-4 hours, take the short trail.

Fantastic walk with brilliant views of the Cabot trail and the sea. The 3 moose who crossed our path made it all the more enjoyable!!

Pros: views, wildlife

Cons: stairs, no restroom facilities

One of the most popular of the trails in the Cape Breton Highland is the skyline trail. It’s a relatively easy hike as the trail is a mix between wooden and natural gravel paths. The hike does take a while, but the views at the end are spectacular. Hiking this trail in early October 2012 was great. Wasn’t too hot and wasn’t too cold. Be prepared for strong winds as you near the end of the trail as the trees give way and it opens up to a wide expanse of the mountain side and ocean views. There are many view points and landing sites but be prepared to walk a lot of stairs. You can see everything you want from the top platform; however views of the remaining platforms may encourage you to for further for photography reasons. I was fortunate enough to see three moose on the hike. We (group) were able to follow them for a good 15 minutes before they evaded us by descending over the mountain side.

Conclusion: Great hike if you want to combine easy of hiking and exceptional views. The trail is long, so be prepared to spend some time hiking it. Inspiriting views of the twisting road through the park, mountains, and the ocean make this trail worth hiking.

The trail is well marked, fairly level. My husband and I made a counter clockwise loop and we were quite alone on the first half of the trail. Then, came to the opening with the view of the ocean, cliff. We saw 2 whale boat stopping not far from short and so looked through our binocular and saw some whales moving about. At the boardwalk, the view was great but very windy.
