The German Bakery Sachsen Cafe & Restaurant is a family owned & operated cafe in downtown Annapolis Royal. It is located right across the street from Fort Anne.
We stopped there for lunch on our way to Port Royal.
When you walk in the door you are enveloped by the smell of fresh-baked German bread, cakes, and desserts. It smelled heavenly!
We were seated by the bubbly young waitress (who we later learned is the daughter of the family). She told us about the specials. We both had homemade soup and pretzels. Stacey had a vegetable soup and I had the last bowl of soup with dumplings in it (Heidi's Goulasch Soup maybe?). Both were delicious! Best soup I've had in a restaurant. But the star of the meal was definitely the pretzel! We got the last 2 of the day. Lucky us! They melted in your mouth!
"Soup of the Day"
Served with bottled water and a butter pretzel
The restaurant is quite homey. The staff are all friendly. We had a wonderful chat with our waitress - the owners' daughter - about what it was like to immigrate from Germany and how much she likes Annapolis Royal and Nova Scotia. We also had a brief chat with Heidi. We weren't planning on it, but she convinced us that we couldn't leave without taking macaroons with us! And we were very glad we did!
