Never could figure out why they had a white flag flying. They have a croquet set just waiting for you! Wonderful views and well manicured lawns.

Drive in and play a game of croquet on the fort green. It was a great, kid friendly, photo friendly morning before catching the ferry. Lots for everyone to do.

Fort Anne, located in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, sits on the site of a hotly contested area of Canada, where power shifted back and forth between French and British settlers in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It is Canada's oldest national historic site, having been so designated in 1917.

The grounds are stunningly beautiful, raised high above the Annapolis River basin and carefully maintained. You can tour the Officer's Quarters and roam the grounds to see exactly how the site was defended by the occupying armies. The exhibits in the main building are exceptionally well done, and fully explain the history of the area.

When we visited, five local artists were busily at work creating watercolors of the various buildings and fortifications. The oldest building is a French powder magazine, dating from 1708.

Children love exploring the site, and for a special treat afterward, Upper Clements Amusement and Adventure Park is nearby.

Stunning site and views, worth a visit and wander around the grounds. Be sure to view from across the water as well.

We visited this site whilst staying in Annapolis. We found it interesting and the boards set around the grounds were informative.
