“Amazing gem in the north.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 21, 2013

Thortons unassuming outside, building and neighbors disguise this amazing restaurant.

In the same building as a bowling alley, and a shooting club, (no shared entrance, not a shooting range) Thortons has an excellent wine selection for any restaurant, let alone one located in Yellowknife.

Billed as a Tapas room, Thorton's also has excellent steaks, fish, and chicken dishes.

The tapas are great especially if you are going in a group, a nice selection of desserts are all served with excellent overall service, and quality.

Make a reservation, especially if you are planning on taking advantage of "Wine down Wednesdays" All wines, champagne are half price.

The ambiance is very nice, well decorated, and easy to forget where you are.

“Big City Food, Backcountry Casual”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

Ate here twice, once for Sunday Brunch (dropped by and got lucky -- lots of places closed on Sundays, and Thornton's was full) and once for Friday dinner (we made the reservations at the end of brunch). Very nice atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff. Food was outstanding, and included many house-made ingredients. Some local fresh fish, some imported items (like ripe tomatoes).

Really can't say enough about this place. Would do well in any large city, didn't expect something this good in Yellowknife.

The price is big-city also, but even "cheap" is expensive in Yellowknife, so the sting wasn't too bad. Wine list is very pricey once you get away from the house selections.

“A gem in Yellowknife”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2013

We were not sure where to go for dinner as there is limited possibilities in Yellowknife, but Thornton's turned into quite a gem. The food was good and the price was reasonable, but it was the enthusiasm of the manager and the staff that made this place so comforting. They showed a genuine interest in "tourists" and the atmosphere of the place was so warm versus the cold outside. Highly recommend to other visiters to the north.

“toronto-level food, service and interior.”

My husband and I like to eat well when we travel so I'm glad for options like Thornton's (and Fuego).
what we found unique was that you hang up your own coats (and claim it later yourself) and also that they have a box of facial tissue right by the entrance for when you come in from the bitter cold with a runny nose. hehe
we had their cotton candy of the day (strawberry, basil, chevre) - really good. i had their crispy pork belly in steamed buns (it was crispy; the buns were the right appetizer size). i had their great slave lake white fish (good) and my husband had their 8 oz bison ribeye which was cooked right and was good too.

“Better than any other in YK”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2013

It's my partner's birthday and I called a few days ago to make a reservation. I left a message and mentioned this as well as asked for a nice table that I had not been there before. I received a prompt conformation. We set off this evening and were warmly greeted by staff and told to check out coats.Such a nice addition as most restaurants here don't offer and being as we all have parkas and they can be bulky t was nice to shed and hang coats. We were seated by the fireplace and asked to tell our waiter if t became too warm.(it never did) . We go an explanation of how the menu works, Tapas and main dishes offered beverages and we were left to peruse the menu.
Long story short, this is by far THE best place in Yellowknife. The service was lovely and genuine. The food is outstanding, it really is. Being from the Bay area I'm accustomed to knowing good food and service.Getting both in Yellowknife, is impossible. I had given up dining out for the most part here, and wanted a special birthday dining experience. Our waiter was wonderful as were the other staff. No phony attitudes, a detail to everything without being too much. It felt relaxed and yet we were taken care of as dining customers should be. Yellowknife's other restaurants certainly have something to live up to as far as I'm concerned. Wonderful overall dining experience. The only suggestion would be to turn down the music just a bit, but what a nice addition to the ambiance.
