Explorer Hotel was great

Review of Explorer Hotel
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jan 31, 2018via mobile
We stayed at the Explorer Hotel in Yellowknife for 3 nights at the end of January. We really enjoyed our stay. We had breakfast at the restaurant twice. Great food! The hotel staff was wonderful as well.

The Explorer Hotel was a fantastic base for our aurora trip to Yellowknife.

        1) The hotel is very centrally located (just a 5 minute walk from the Yellowknife Centre--with the famous temperature sign--and shops like Northern Souvenirs and the Yellowknife Book Cellar, plus a quick drive to the Price of Wales Heritage Centre).

        2) The hotel itself is great. The rooms are massive-- huge king beds with incredibly thick and comfortable down comforters (perfect for minus 30 degree winter weather!) and large picture windows to watch the gorgeous Yellowknife winter sunsets. Importantly, the hotels also have fridges and microwaves, which is great for storing and eating snacks.

The two restaurants (there's a restaurant and then a slightly more casual lounge) offer extensive menus with huge portions (you can easily split entrees at the restaurants). Importantly, the restaurants have long hours, which is particularly valuable on Sunday when many other places in Yellowknife are closed.

        3) The hotel also offers a free shuttle to/from the airport, which is very handy. For early morning airport departures prior to the restaurant's 7 am opening time, the staff provides a small continental breakfast of pastries and coffee-- it was much appreciated. There is also a small but very functional gym, and the staff in the restaurant and at the front desk is warm, friendly and helpful (including with recommendations around Yellowknife). The hotel is also undergoing an expansion/renovation.

I highly recommend a stay at the Explorer without hesitation.

Great hotel in close proximity to supermarkets, shops and restaurants. The hotel restaurant was great as well but a bit pricey. The room was spacious with enough room for 2 adults and 2 kid. Our room came with 2 queen beds which were comfortable to sleep in. The staff were very helpful and friendly. I highly recommend this hotel.

Room tip: Pick a room facing the Ice Road.

We stayed 4 nights this past December for our first trip to Yellowknife and had an excellent time. The hotel was very clean and conveniently located. Food options in the hotel were good (and helpful) when we didn't want to journey out in the cold for a quick bite to eat. The hotel is very obviously a central hub of activity with constant shuttle pick ups and drop offs from the various tours. Great view from the top floor rooms!

The only negative we experienced was a lack of available electrical outlets in the lower parking area (the upper area with outlets is closed for construction), which meant plugging in the battery warmer for a rental car was impossible -- (this is critical toward being able to start the car without a jump after sitting all night on some of the coldest nights.) We'd happily stay again after the completion of the construction.

Room tip: Excellent views from the top floor looking away from the parking lot
