I did not expect to be working in YK this summer - but its just the way things went. Thankfully, not only were the staff at the hotel amazingly accommodating and friendly, but my end of day wind down drink was in the lounge each night. Often I was alone so the company of Skye and Amy was not just appreciated - but it became the highlight of my day! Considering the highly transient nature of the clientele, they always remembered my name, my drink, and what I last chatted them about. When I'm done this stint in YK, I'm gonna miss these ladies tremendously.

Do NOT go to YK and not stop in and see Skye and Amy at the Trapline Lounge. Say hi from Sonya!

PS. They make the BEST Hendrick's Gin and Tonic EVER!!!!

My husband, my cat and myself stayed at the Explorer recently while waiting to move into our apartment. We found the staff very helpful, our room was nice, had a fridge and microwave, which was handy, decent wifi and it was spotless. The best part of staying there was the lounge. The food was wonderful.. highly recommend the lamb pops and the deep fried mac and cheese (little bits and just YUM). After one evening there for dinner, Amy and Skye remembered our drink choices and what we like to eat. Not to mention that they make the BEST mojito in Canada! Now that we are settled here (pretty much anyway), the Explorer is and will always be our "go to" place for a bite and a drink. Thanks for making our intro to Yellowknife so welcoming. The first place we stayed at did not and was not even close to being clean. Hands down.. the best place to stay in Yellowknife.

Room Tip: Ask for a larger room if available, we did and they upgraded us to a jr. suite (two queen beds). Tak...

Stayed with my family for a week in July. Looking online the pics are deceiving just be aware. I'm used to a suite having a separate bedroom and sitting area. But up there anything is called a suite if the have a bar fridge and a microwave oven. I had called and asked for a suite. I travel with a small child and specifically said I wanted the 2 rooms and a king bed. What I got when I checked in was a regular room with 2 queen beds but with a bar fridge and microwave. So just be sure you get what you ask for. On the website if you click photos for any of the "suites" they all show photos of the executive suite which is not a fair representation of the rooms!

However the hotel did make it right and the lady at the front desk was amazing in doing everything she could to fix the mistake for us. The rest of the week she was always there with a smile and recommendation for lunch or dinner.

We thank you very much for you nice comments about our location and staff. We are sorry, however, that it wasn't clear that the Junior Suite did not have a door to separate the living area from the bedroom. We hope you give us the opportunity to serve you again in the near future.

Best regards

We were in town for a wedding and booked a large suite in order to host family. Room was spacious but more importantly for any hotel, the bed was so comfortable with a soft mattress and great pillows. Staff are very friendly and helpful attending to every request be it large or small. Maybe we had "the best room in town" but still a comfortable bed and friendly staff is all we ask for.

My wife Marlene and I spent three days and nights at the Explorer en route and coming back from our fabulous fishing trip at Plummers Arctic Lodges on Great Bear Lake. Plummers enthusiastically endorses the Explorer, and it is a major departure point for their guests. The rooms are spacious and quiet; the tub just right for weary fishermen soaking their tired bones. The staff is extremely helpful at all hours. The hotel is well located for an easy stroll around a lot of Yellowknife's stores. While the restaurant offers great fare, a great view and a fireplace, you should be careful when ordering. Breakfast was great, but we ordered a "bowl" of admittedly delicious seafood soup for lunch and received two smallish CUPS of soup for a $30.00 lunch the size of a modern airplane snack. We did better ordering the meaty wings from the Trappers Bar for a light supper and some free hors d'oeuvres. Don't misunderstand us, the food at the restaurant is of superb quality, but you'd be better off going with the specials at lunch instead of taking the "a la carte" route. This is, overall, a great place to stay. We'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: Rooms on "back" side are best views. The higher the better.

Stayed in the Explorer twice (3 nights) while passing through Yellowknife. Rooms were well appointed. Eight floors w/ 2 elevators. Store room for luggage. All the basics are there. Some wear noted in the bathrooms, but otherwise very comfortable. Good dining room with ample breakfast choices, including huge buffet. Hotel is a short walk from the Northern Frontier Visitor's Centre (good exhibits & gift shop; also maps) and Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Center (museum & archives). Short walk to center of Yellowknife, banks/ATMs, etc.

Room Tip: Ask for room facing west for a view of Frame Lake.

With Yellow Knife as our destination, I left with a group of Harley riders in early August, 2012, for another great adventure. After logging nearly 3,000 miles of beautiful riding through northern United States, western Alberta, eastern British Columbia and southern Northwest Territory, we arrived at the beautiful city of Yellow Knife. The entire trip was blessed with beautiful weather, scenery that can't be described and people who went out of their way to be friendly and helpful.
When checking in at the Explorer Hotel, we asked permission to park our bikes close to the front entry where there would be security cameras and good lighting. The request was denied and we were told to park on the hill at the far end of the hotel. I asked a staff member if it would be safe to leave some camping gear on the bike and was told immediately to remove anything of value. The parking area was covered with large loose gravel and not fit for motorcycle parking.
The dream trip turned into a nightmare about two hours after checking in. All five Harleys were lying on their sides. Hotel management apologized but would not accept any responsibility or give any discount on the expensive rooms. They didn't even offer a free cup of coffee or a beer.
In the past 13 years I have logged over 160,000 km (100,000 mi) on my motorcycle across Canada and the US and have been a guest in over 150 hotels, motels and campgrounds. Of these, the lack of responsibility and the marginal service given at the Explorer Hotel puts it at the top of my "Do Not Return or Recommend" list. If you are riding a motorcycle or even own one, don't waste time checking out the Explorer Hotel.
They should be ashamed of themselves!
