As soon as you walk in you immediately take in the ambiance of an open space chock full of activity and organized
chaos! The restaurant is inside an old bank building, high ceiling and open spaces. The kitchen is at the back open for all to see and the bar is in the middle.
Service was friendly, attentive and welcoming.
We started with a couple of cocktails, fresh oysters, steak tartare and beef tataki - both delicious. Mains were the cod and duck breast - again both cooked perfectly. If we could have licked the plates clean we would have. To finish a 20 year port with vinegar pie and creme brûlée. First time for the vinegar pie and it was delicious.
What a delightful culinary delight and experience!

This a great spot to have a few drinks or stay for the evening. Interesting and varied menu. Easy parking in front of the restaurant or on Water Street. This restaurant appears to source most of ingredients locally as we witnessed beautiful root vegetables delivered.
The deserts blew my mind as we shared a selection at the table. The creme brule is a must!

Wonderful food. Fresh and local. Innovative preparations. Knowledgeable service, with a story about every dish. Good selection of local beer on tap. The oysters were magnificent - from Bay of Fundy and PEI. The cod soup was excellent, as was the cod preparation entree. Vinegar pie dessert is unique -- quite good although not something that everyone will like.

This is run by the same people who do Raymond's and it's delicious. The food is very tasty and unique. The atmosphere is nice, not too fancy and it's in an old bank so it's got a cool vault you can eat in. Try the seafood pasta or the lamb pasta, their sweet and spicy cocktail (I think it was called devil's nectar?), and their vinegar pie.

We had a lovely lunch at Merchant Tavern before leaving St. John's to fly home. I started with their special Caesar (complete with a raw oyster - almost a meal in itself!), then the daily special of pan roasted halibut with squash and Brussels sprouts, while my husband had their excellent pasta with lamb. Portions were very generous. We finished with vinegar pie served with blueberries and tea ice cream made in-house. The whole meal was excellent, and a wonderful way to finish up our holiday.
