My family enjoyed a great meal at Duke of Duckworth. Not being a fan of deep fried fish, I reluctantly agreed to go along with the request of my family. I was pleasantly surprised. The fish was incredibly fresh, the service excellent and the price just right for a family of 4. Loved the decor and atmosphere.

The locals we talked to said this was the best fish and chips in St. John's and it was everything they said it was. Huge portions and a batter that was the crispiest and thinnest I've ever had. Perfect. Staff was great too - super friendly. We had fish and chips in London, England and the Duke surpassed them all!

Those who compare it to an old English pub evidently haven't been to one however it's still a reasonable rendition of a North American idea of what an English pub looks like. The atmosphere is suitably pub-like with an an interesting and eclectic crowd although the ubiquitous TV monitors running myriad sport channels are a distraction. The service is prompt and the beer is good but the standout performance is the Duke's Fish & Chips: unquestionably the best F&C on this side of the Atlantic (and probably the other) and a not-to-be-missed indulgence for anyone visiting St. John's who is not counting calories. There is much else on the menu that's not from the sea but, here in Newfoundland, cod reigns supreme. Be warned: the dishes are enormous so bring a good appetite with you.

Wonderful atmosphere - old British Pub Style.
Excellent Fish & Chips and great Turkey Pot Pie. Good Beer on tap. Lots of fun.
