Visited this pub for lunch, chose it from previous reviews. At 1st we didn't understand why it wasn't recommended by a local until we sipped the beer and sampled the food. We ordered assorted beers and a cider, all were served slightly cooler than room temperature. I finally asked for ice and added it to my cider. The pub is rather dingy, but many are. The food arrived. What should have been hot, was warm and what should have been chilled was room temperature, so it matched our drinks. The fish was tasty with a light batter, but the chips were overcooked and very dark. I question how often the oil is changed for frying. I visited the bathroom before leaving the pub and it was a step above the worst gas station bathroom I have ever visited. The wait staff was friendly, but overall the rest of the experience of the pub fare was mediocre and I will not be returning.

Warm beer.

Standard pub menu.

Soft, burned fries. The cod was fresh on the day we visited, and okay.

Shabby, smelly, non-airconditioned interior.

Did I mention the warm beer?

Fresh cod and homemade fries with creamy coleslaw makes a great pub meal. Then the craft beer in an ice cold jug makes this a memorable meal and this is where Republic of Doyle is set.

We preferred this pub to the places on St. George. A great selection of local beers. Excellent fish and chips. Good service.

You should visit this place as it appears to be somewhat of a local institution. A lack of dinner service at other pubs lead us to the Duke. Apparently the TV show Republic of Doyle films there, or did and now has a replicate set. An authentic pub, warm service and atmosphere, average pub menu, but unfortunately the food isn't up to snuff. Wine glasses dating back to the 70's - extremely small. Cheap and cheerful but don't make it a destination for a meal.
