Hello Everyone, ,,
I am writing this review in the connection with public humiliation , discrimination behave and mean behave to us by India Gate, st john's Newfoundland, Canada in a "Thanks Givingday".
Including myself and two other friends went to INDIA GATE here in st john's, NL for to celebrate THANKS GIVING DAY for a dinner around 6 :30 pm. ish. The waitress took us to table and then we order all together around $30, food for three of us. While drinking mango juice, the owner of that restaurant, came to us and inform us we cannot eat food up there unless we order over $20 each, and he advice us he cannot make any profit, if we order $ 30 for all three of us. He told us to leave unless we order more food on the table.
So , we politely leave but before leaving the restaurant, while in the front desk paying for the food, I ask the waitress , to talk to the owner. Owner pretended that he is busy, send a guy to talk to us on the behalf of him.
Me and my friends while talking to them inform them it does not mention the in the menu as each person had to be ordered $20 up, Told us not to show up their restaurant anytime and also mention us saying that you guys won’t get this behave anywhere with a very rude attitude.
Three of us feel like we were discriminated and publicly humiliated. About us, we are Masters and Undergrad student at Memorial University.
We went to RNC in that night for to complain but later they inform us to send it to “Better Business Bureau “
We also recorded the conversation while we were in the front desk paying the bills. There is already complain made to Better Business Bureau. We are sharing to the public our worst experience in that we had , in that thanks giving day.

India Gate was packed when I stopped in for the lunch buffet. The owner looked put-out that I didn't have a reservation and upon finishing, was just interested in taking my money. He didn't show any interest in my enjoyment of the food, for example, by asking "how was your lunch?" That said, the rest of the staff were friendly and diligent. There was a nice variety of food in the buffet, although all the dishes had the same sweet creamy flavour. There was very little variety, heat, intensity or subtlety in the spicing - which is what an array of Indian dishes should have. Overrated and disappointing.

There are two types of review published about this restaurant,1) raves about the food and 2)complaints about reservations and rude service. It must be a cultural thing?

The reservation thing seems silly to most of us. You call them and they call you back, maybe.
We called and reserved but our guest was a little late getting ready so we called again to say we would be a little late about 15 minutes. No problem the man says, but when we got there we had to wait even though there were obviously tables available.

So anyway why stress? we waited our little penitent 5 minutes until they could seat us.

So now to the food an appetizer followed by Lamb vindaloo, Mararani Chicken , Baigan Masala, rice Pillaw Garlic Naan and Raita. All very tasty and good , three people 100 bucks plus tip tax and beer 140.

I think they could do a lot better on the public relations side but the youthful male server we had was helpful and diligently explained what it was we were actually eating, which was hot and which was not. All in all it was pleasant night out for three tourists.

We couldn't tell you whether the food was any good because we couldn't get in without a reservation. We would have understood if the restaurant was full but standing at the front desk we could see no one, there was nothing but a sea of empty tables. The host at the front desk was pretty obnoxious, we requested a table for 2, he checked his wee list and hmmmed and hawwed and then declared that they were full. Oh well, his loss we are good tippers. We then headed down to the Afghan restaurant on the other side of the street further down at the recommendation of a couple of local people we met on the sidewalk where we had a great meal for 1/2 of what it would cost at India Gate. So our recommendation would be to skip the bad attitude at India Gate and head down to the Afghan restaurant.

Had the lunch buffet, delicious. Service was outstanding. We came in toward the end of lunch service and no one minded at all. Definitely go back.
