“An Enjoyable Dining Experience.”
Reviewed March 23, 2014

This is a welcome addition to St. John's. A unique dining experience as it is rodizio format, meaning the server delivers different offerings to your table, in short time intervals. The offerings include shrimp, chicken, steak, ribs, fish, and much more. A great experience for meat lovers, in particular. The food is good, and comparable to Brazilian restaurants that I have had across North America.

Myself and my wife went there for supper. To start, they place a card on the table listing the evening layout of offerings(approximately 12 offerings) that the server will come to your table with to supplement your salad bar selections. You can sample at least one item off the entire offerings list in about one and a half to two hours. The time in between servings being delivered to your table is fairly quick; approximately five minutes per interval. During our meal, the salad bar offered fries, chicken nuggets, salads, wedges, and other side dishes, probably 20 different selections, in total.

The restaurant itself is nice and an enjoyable dining experience. Our meal was approximately $60 before tip, for two. A good price for good food. All in all, a nice experience.

“Welcome variety in St. John's”
Reviewed March 20, 2014

My girlfriend and I visited Rio in the week leading up to their official opening. For anyone who isn't familiar with it, the 'rodizio' format is a fixed price, all you can eat meal where the wait staff bring dishes to the table and offer them to the diners. Additionally there is a side bar with salad options that the diners help themselves to.

The proprietor served us himself throughout the evening and was extremely courteous and friendly, clearly enthusiastic about the restaurant and told us about his plans to improve the operation in future. They had 15 dishes to sample that night, dominated by meat but featuring a few fruit and fish dishes. Everything we sampled was excellent and I thoroughly recommend it.

It's important to understand the nature of the dining format before deciding whether to go or not. There will be frequent breaks between receiving new samples, so be prepared to spend a leisurely time there with alternating phases of eating and socialising. It's also unlikely vegetarians would have an enjoyable time.

“Nice for a change”
Reviewed March 17, 2014

Visited the Rio on a Friday night with my wife and a couple of friends and we were all thankful we did. This was my first experience in a Brazilian restaurant but the others at my table had all been elsewhere and said The Rio is a nice comparison. The food was good. We never had to wait too long for each option but you should never go here if you are in a rush. The meats, sausages, and fruits were all beautifully prepared and seasoned. If I have any constructive advice it would be to use real chicken for the bacon wrapped chicken, such as thigh meat as apposed to the pintys type pumped breast that was used.
For the price and style of service which is new to St.John's, I would say this is a great spot to visit with friends.

“Solid Lunch Buffet!”
Reviewed March 17, 2014

We had read a very positive review of this new steakhouse in St Johns, NL, so we decided to try it out.

The lunch buffet had a large assortment of fresh salads, notably the potatoe salad and the bean salad were delicious and all salads seemed very fresh. Not much selection for a children's option at the buffet, for sure.

The meat selection was great, with a wide assortment of available options. The all-you-could-eat ribs were absolutely delicious and very tender, probably the best item on the buffet. Even the chicken tenders were quite tasty and perfectly cooked.

There was only one server so drink refills were a bit slow, but he was very personable and efficient when asked for anything.

Overall an excellent value for the price, and highly recommend the ribs! The supper buffet, which our waiter told us about on paying our bill, looks even more interesting. Definitely worth a visit!!
