“Does not live up to the Marriott name”
Reviewed September 20, 2009

Hotel is well located with some rooms having a view of the industrial harbour. This is a working harbour with lots of cranes, forklifts, container movement and noise. Do not expect a serene environment. Bring quality ear plugs for sleeping as the port activities start very early. The rooms and suites are not up to par with other Marriott locations but they are generally clean and confortable. Staff are friendly but service is very slow. Do not expect your roon to be serviced by the housekeeping staff until the early evening. The staff seem to not know how to run the hotel efficiently but at least they smile while they fumble through the process. There is no parking at the hotel. You have to park across the main downtown street and then walk over with your luggage. There is no valet service or bellboys to assist during the move from one side of the street to the other. Rooms are priced at normal Marriott rates without the normal Marriott service level. There is an attached diner called Smitthy's that is part of the open area in the lobby. The food is below average and over priced. Might pass as an OK option for the solo business traveller to get a breakfast (if you are prepared to wait) but not recommended for a nice dinner or lunch with your spouse or family. Althought it overlooks the industrial habour it feels more like you are sitting in an airport lounge. You can do a lot better in St. John's for less money. Keep looking!

Great Hotel, especially for the business traveller - rooms were clean and well appointed. Great views of the harbour. The hotel doesn't have a pool but was still good value for the money, considering the cost of some of the other hotels in the city. Central location as everything within walking distance. Staff were always very friendly. Would recommend without hesitation

An excellent mid-size hotel, unparalled in friendliness and service. Be sure to ask for a harbour-side room....be willing to pay the bit extra. There's no other view like it in all of Canada!! If you're from New York or Kansas or Orillia...or even Vancouver -- you'll pinch yourself everytime you look out the window. A pocket-harbour, alive with activity and awesome scenery. They don't call Newfoundland 'The Rock' for nothing. Rooms are large and comfortable. Be sure to stop by the lobby bar for a drink.....short of the CN Tower in Toronto, again -- there's no view like it. The Smitty's Restaurant is also okay.... especially if you opt for their traditional Newfoundland dishes like crab and cod...and 'Newfie Bennie' for breakfast.

I had a harbor view room for my stay at this hotel. The view was OK. I did not have any problems with port noises, or any other noises for that matter.

The staff was very helpful and accomodating to this American on his first trip to Canada. They even pointed out a few good places to spot icebergs not very far down the coast.

I never had a problem finding a spot in the free parking lot across the street.

The breakfast in the restaurant in the lobby was good, but not cheap.

I would definately stay there again.

Stayed 3 nights in harbour view room on 7th floor.
Great room, big, very clean, wonderful view. Would stay there again without a problem!
Ate breakfast once at the restaurant, food was so-so. Went to Cora's the other days on Water street: great breakfasts.

We stayed 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our time in St John's. We had a 5th floor room with harbour view......I recommend floors 5 to 7 if you want the best harbour view. The room was large with a king bed and large bathroom. We ate breakfasts at Smitty's although a little pricey but very plentiful and good. Parking was no problem even though it is across the street.....always seemed to be some free spaces. We walked all over the downtown area. I must mention that the staff were all very kind and helpful.

Location - We were able to walk anywhere including up to Cabot Tower. The walk to George Street and the other dining/shopping/drinking places wasn't a problem at all. The view from the harbor side and the bar was really nice.

I only ate at the restraurant Smitty's once. Not bad.

The parking was only ok. We were barely able to find a spot a couple of times and parked on the street for the last night.

I thought that the Hotel was nice and had no complaints at all. I would stay again without hesitation.
