Canada/US coast to coast, hotel #18, 3 nights

This is the first time I've been assigned a room below the lobby. One time I entered the elevator with a lady and pressed down and she said to me "what's down there" and I said "the dungeons". At least due to the fact the hotel is on a hill we had a window that gave us a bit of a harbour view. I can't even imagine what the people across the hall had for a view, did they even have a window. Other than the descending below the lobby the hotel room was quite fine, clean and comfortable. The staff were courteous and I slept very well. We would stay at this hotel again.

Thank you for your honest feedback! We are delighted to hear that your room was clean and comfortable and that you enjoyed the view of the harbour. We would like to note that there were no guestrooms on the other side of the hall on the level that you stayed on, all guest rooms at our property have a window! Our property is designed to maximize space and views given that we are built on one of the many beautiful hills in St. John's! We appreciate that you took the time to share your comments and we hope to welcome you back again soon!

Given the quality and high standards associated with the brand, I had thought this property would have been better given the high room rate. I have stayed at several other Courtyard properties and this one certainly pales in comparison.
The property seems worn and in need of updating. Experienced several annoying noises throughout the night making the stay very unenjoyable. No breakfast included?? I would not stay at this property again.

We had a junior suite overlooking the harbour. Watching all the activity around the ships was fascinating. We had a problem with a tour booking that was rescheduled and the hotel staff fixed it all for us. The location was perfect for walking around downtown, Signal Hill, Quidi Vidi and just about everywhere. We were given printouts for directions to Cape Spear and Petty Harbour and any question we asked was answered promptly and accurately. We would stay here again for sure.

Arrived at this hotel as part of package which included flight plus four nights accommodation. We were not off to a good start having had trouble booking our plane seats and then car rental difficulties. The hotel had no record of our reservation and it was questionable as to whether they had any rooms left. We had all of our papers which hotel staff took for investigation. We were taken to the lounge and offered refreshments and assured we would be taken care of. The Staff (Stewart at reception and Front Office Manager, Kymm Bennett) went to work to solve the problem. It took a very long time but they kept us updated and we were told not to worry and they were very apologetic even though it was obvious the hotel was not at fault here. After one hour and many phone calls to the airline and travel agency staff were at a dead end. Kymm Bennett did a lot of shuffling etc and soon after we were assigned to our beautiful room and were given complimentary drink vouchers and again the management apologized for our predicament and for the delay getting us a room. The room was perfect - everything was perfectly clean and the bed, linens, furniture etc was all in new condition. We had an excellent view of the harbour with many ships coming and going. Signal Hill was also visible. It was the perfect location. During our stay the staff/management continued to check in on us to make sure our stay was enjoyable. We were not charged for our accommodations even though to our knowledge the problem was not rectified during our stay. The whole approach to this matter by the hotel staff made the difference between a wonderful visit to St. Johns or an ugly situation. Thanks so much to everyone!! We would highly recommend a visit to this hotel in old downtown St.Johns, NFLD.
Perfect in every way. St. Johns and the Avalon Peninsula was a beautiful, friendly place to vacation. We'll be back.

We came to stay at the Courtyard by Marriott in St. John's after staying at several other brands of Marriott hotels (Fairfield, Marriott, Residence Inn, etc) and thought it would be nice to try it out.
The room itself was nice and clean.

The parking lot was full (with non-Marriott guests parking there), but they have free valet services, so that was good.

I was a bit disappointed with the customer service from overnight staff.
We went downstairs to check out the little market and noticed they were baking cookies in the market corner. There were no prices, so I inquired about them, "Oh they're complimentary cookies for guests" said the front desk agent, in 10 mins, they would be done. I went up to tell my husband, who was excited about this little extra. We came down again and there were a couple of cookies left. There were different varieties baking a few minutes before. The lobby was empty, there were no guests around as this was after 12am, but the front desk agent and night houseman were eating them. Are they employee perks or compliments for the guests? A few people checked in about 15 mins later, but there were no cookies left.

I also bought popcorn from the market, and used the microwave in the market area to pop it, pressing the popcorn button on the microwave. After it had done, I noticed less than half the kernels were popped. I showed this to the front desk agent, she said "yeah, that kind is like that, I have them at home". It was orville redenbachers. I have them home too, and yes they do pop the full bag. It would have been nice if she had have offered me another bag to try, or give me a refund on the money paid on the popcorn, or even apologize...but nope.

They do have breakfast at the hotel provided by Smitty's, but their prices for the breakfasts are expensive ($16.95) perhaps we are spoiled by free breakfast buffets provided by the Fairfields and Residence inns by Marriott. There is a Cora's nearby though with excellent breakfasts.

Other than the poor customer service overnight, the hotel is really nice and in the heart of downtown St. John's.

Room Tip: harbour side rooms have a nice view of the Narrows.

But that is just one of my quirks. Don't you think a bidet just makes your stay...? Or is that just me?

But seriously, the service, the people, the room was great. The room we had was quite large with a microwave and a coffee machine, as well as a fridge. This meant we could buy some small items and reheat them if we wanted, which we did when we spotted a Moose Pie for sale in a shop. Novelty for us, so it was great that we could re-heat it and eat it in the room. The only missing was cutlery.

The location was good too, but I guess with such a small town, any hotel in town would be good for exploring in town. Very walkable, albeit a little hilly. But good walking distance to most things, including great cafes and food outlets.

The gym is very small, with a couple of running machines and a couple of free-weights with one machine weight. But if you are just into running, it works. Although running along the harbour would be far prettier.

The thing we liked to the most was the staff. They were very friendly, very helpful and genuinely nice. Five stars for the staff we encountered.

Room Tip: The breakfast buffet appears to only be on the weekend. The week days on has an a la carte menu.
