“First trip to Newfoundland”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

I was so glad that we stayed at The Courtyard by Marriott on Sept 7 & 8th. The hotel is in a good location and within walking distance of the waterfront ( we were there to meet my older son on HMCS Charlottetown which was returning from the Middle East on an eight and half month deployment). A brisk walk to George Street if you want to try out the bars! The Marriott was clean and rooms were comfortable, restaurant on site was great for breakfast. Most hotels are pretty much the same and what makes this one great is the staff. Jamie on the front desk was excellent from the time we arrived until we left. He always had a smile and gave us good advice for the restaurants, shops and attractions. Excellent service is what makes an excellent experience!

Room Tip: Harbour view is great

My wife & I stayed at this hotel on August 16,17,& 18, 2012. The location is within easy walking distance of downtown attractions. The parking is across the street from the hotel. Edgar at the reception desk was extremely helpful welcoming us to the the hotel and to St.John's. As the parking lot is qute small it was explained that if ever it was full not to worry as we could leave our car outside the hotel and it would be parked for us. That actually did occur on one evening. When requested the following morning, the car was brought to the front of the hotel for us. An excellent and complimentary service. In addition the parking is free, the use of the computer/printer is free, free coffee is available in the lobby 24hrs.
Our room was on the 7th floor with a simply wonderful view overlooking the harbour.
The room was very spacious with 2 queen beds, writing desk, fridge and a large bathroom.
The entire room/bathroom was " squeaky clean" as my wife described it. The harbour at this particular spot is very busy with the constant flow of the supply ships heading to/from the Hibernia Oil rigs.We ate breakfast each of the 3 mornings and found the menu to be quite extensive and inexpensive. On one night we ate our dinner there and took advantage of the specials with my wife having the FULL crab dinner for $24. I consider that to be great value.
The service on each occasion was excellent and the breakfasts especially were served quickly.
On the negative side we had an alcoholic drink at the bar one night and found them to be extremely expensive.
On our first morning before going out we placed a card on the pillow which was to show that we did not want the bed linen changed. The bedclothes were folded neatly DOWN by my wife and upon our return in the late afternoon found that although the housekeeper had done everything else she had not made the bed. Not a big deal and it did not happen again.
We would most definitely stay here in the future.

Room Tip: The 7th floor with a harbour view is great.

The Courtyard was the first hotel I stayed in St John's.
It is a nice hotel with a friendly staff.
I had a room with a harbour view and didn't sleep well as workers were unloading boats all night and the "ring" of truck reversing was too loud.
The rooms are very small but clean.
Restaurant was not great, long wait and average food.

Due to the delay of Atlantic Marine ferry for 15 hours, we arrived at mid night. all the hotels at st john's are very expensive, it looks good to live here for total $150, Everything in the hotel is perfect.

Of all the places we stayed in Newfoundland and Labrador, this was the most "luxurious." It's a typical Courtyard by Marriott: clean, plush beds, reasonable prices (but not inexpensive). Having a half-size refrigerator and a coffee maker was great (able to keep leftovers from dining out). Has a self-service laundry (currently CAD $1.25 per load) next to the exercise room. Front desk has complimentary boxes of laundry detergent and dryer fabric softener. Our "harborside" view had a nice view of the roof of the restaurant on the 4th floor, but could still see the Narrows under Signal Hill and Cabot Tower, as well as the docks directly in front of us. Only ate at the on-site restaurant Smitty for breakfast: food was served quickly; the fish cakes and eggs were fine. Only drawback of this hotel was that the main parking lot across the street is very small. On 2 nights out of 3, our car had to be "valet parked" in a secondary lot down the next street; the bell hop had to go retrieve the vehicle each morning (once it had been moved across the street already, the other time he had to walk 2 blocks to retrieve it). Located in a picturesque neighborhood near the Anglican Garrison Church of St. Thomas, not too far of a walk from the Catholic and Anglican Churches of St. John's.

My boyfriend and I stayed here recently and we loved our room over looking the harbour and the price was good to. When we needed directions or answers to any questions the front desk staff were very helpful. The only downside to the place is the restaurant which has really bad food and could use some better options. Other than this its our preferred hotel when we come back to town!

Plus the inside restaurant had the most amazing calamari! Fresh and local! It has a very nice view over the port, though Ports as a rule aren't that beautiful. The rooms was two double beds, so not alot of extra space, but it's just what we needed for a quick overnight before leaving for further north.
