I booked flights to St John’s on a whim for my husband and I as a getaway weekend. The Super 8 had the best rates for a Jacuzzi room so we decided to book it.
We arrived Friday of the Labour Day weekend and stayed til Monday. The hotel was definitely full Friday night and had some vacancies Saturday and Sunday. There were lots of families with young children and pets. We knew to expect this, as one might with any reasonably priced hotel with a pool, on the last weekend before school starts. I came to learn that the hotel is busy with families most weekends throughout the year, less so during the week ,so if you’re looking to avoid children and pets then don’t go on a weekend. I think this hotel would be perfect for business travelers during the week. It is also one of the few places which still has smoking rooms, for the time being at least.
There was some running in the halls by children but not much after the pool closed at 10:00 p.m. After that we found the place to be quite quiet, no problem getting to sleep. The floors in the elevators were often wet with people coming from the pool but warning were in place.
The included breakfast is basic continental fare, tea, coffee, pre packaged muffins, bagels, bread (a toaster), jams, jellies & cream cheese in packets, fresh fruit, a variety of cereals and milk. There are vending machines in the lobby with the usual snack items and beverages.
We found the room to be large, very clean and well maintained. The staff is friendly and accommodating. There was a LCD TV, microwave and small fridge in the room. There was very little “closet” space for hanging clothes and the bathroom was somewhat small but had a nice shower. I assume for the luxury of having a Jacuzzi tub in the room one had to sacrifice space somewhere, we were fine with it. I also liked the fact that there was a window we could open for some fresh air. The old style bedspreads are still used, would be nicer if they had duvets as many places are using now.
What we saw of the rest of the hotel seemed well maintained. We did not have time to make use of the pool nor did we even take a look at it so I can’t comment on it.
The hotel is almost equal distance between the airport and downtown, a car is a definite must. It is about a $10 cab ride to the downtown area from the hotel.
I think if one does a bit of research they will know if this hotel will be suitable for them. It met and even exceeded some of our expectations. We found it perfect for our needs and budget and would stay here again with no hesitation.
