“Great place to stay !!!”
Reviewed June 18, 2007

I had never stayed in such a nice place for the cost ( $99.00) a night . The only drawback was it was very warm in the room as the new air conditioner was not installed as of yet . The room was very clean and comfortable . Staff was exellent !! I would say to anyone who is thinking of staying any place else . Check this place out first .
Lastly , thank you Hometel for a great Newfoundland resting place .

excellent place. i'm writing this review using their free wifi (just one of the reasons why Hometel rocks!), lying on a super comfy bed in my clean, spacious, beautifully decorated room (modern, pared down, tasteful, comfortable). For the price (I paid $99 Can/night), you can't beat this hotel. I would come back in a heartbeat.

highlights include:
- huge bathroom
- very clean
- brand new
- reasonably priced snacks (chips, bottled water, juice, pop, candy bars, cookies -- all $1.50 - $2 each)
- free wifi and wired internet access
- free phone calls across north america (i kid you not!)

We stayed at the Hometel for 2 nights over the Thanksgiving weekend while we were in St. John's visiting family. We had an amazing rate on the room ($79/night) which included breakfast.

The management was very helpful in letting us check in a couple of hours early so that we could travel around to see our family.

We staying in one of the suites on the top floor of a brownstone. It was a very nice room, comfortable bed with lots of cushy pillows, big TV, and sparkling clean bathroom with nice amenities.

The big detractor to our experience was the lack of soundproofing. The first night, our neighbours were up until 2 am and then got up at 7 ... and I swear it was as though they were holding their conversation in our room. The second night, we were awoken at 7 am due to construction right outside our window.

I loved the room and the location (and the price!) but I can't handle not being able to sleep because of noise. I will try another hotel next time unless these issues are resolved.

  • Liked — Lovely amenities, sparkling clean.
  • Disliked — Constant noise!
  • Tips/Secrets — Great for large groups - you could rent a whole brownstone as a group, with your own rooms and shared kitchen.

We are in our fiftys and wanted a place within walking distances of most amenities at a reasonable place and found it at Hometel.
George Street was about a 20 min walk, with shopping, grocery store, restaurants within minutes. We stayed on the ground floor in bldg 14 and would recommend staying on the second or third floor. When anyone left or entered you heard them on the stairs, as well the cleaning staff supply room was just outside our door, so at 8:00 am sharp you heard them talking and getting ready. Rooms were smaller than pictured but clean and comfortable with everything you needed. They advertised a hot breakfast which beside the toasted buns was probably describing the instant oatmeal that was available. Rooms were cleaned every day and the queen sized bed very comfortable. The free north american long distance calls was a nice benefit to staying there. There was also access to a computer and internet in the main building lobby. As compared to the $185 per night at the Delta the $85 a night here was a bargain.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a night in August and were quite impressed with this place. It is walking distance to the attractions, on the way up to Signal Hill. The street has identical townhouses on either side, but one side is the 8 or so b&b buildings, with each having its own name (eg. The Shaw) and the other side are privately owned places. The room was not huge but it had a bar fridge on top of the standard furnishings. The bath was a nice size (watch out for fussy blinds) and overall the décor is quite stylish and still feels "new". It is a nice place if you want a change from the standard chain hotels but don't want to go the traditional or frilly b&b route. Price is certainly reasonable too. You certainly feel like you have your own space, you are not intruding on anyone in their private home (since we were out late partying on George Street the night we stayed, that was one of our concerns). I'm not sure if there was anyone else in our building- if there was I certainly didn't hear them. I think all rooms were up at least one flight of stairs though so that may limit some people. The staff seemed professional and were accomodating to our one fairly standard request--we arrived early and therefore needed to store our luggage while we toured around before official check in. Breakfast is in the main townhouse building on the street and was fine for me--a selection of toast, cereal, muffin, yogurt, fruit and STARBUCKS COFFEE!!! Our friends stayed here for their entire St. John's visit and were equally happy (except that their keycard didn't work one day).

Recently we stayed at the new Luxury Accommodations in downtown St. John's. Its called Hometel on Signal Hill. This is advertised as "the new hotel alternative" so we wanted to see what it was all about. We stayed for one night and throughly enjoyed our stay. The Homtel consists of about 20 brown stone homes all on the same street. Our room was very clean, comfortable and stylish, and included a 4 pc ensuite bath. We had access to a dining area in the house and although we didn't use it there was a common living room accessible. Breakfast was included. We had to go to the main house for breakfast, where you could have bagels, toast, cereal, fruit, yogurt, muffins, juice, milk, coffee, tea .. etc. It was self serve in a bright spacious kitchen and dining area.
The rooms were very modern, but not as large as I had expected from looking at the photo's on the web site. I would certainly recommend the Homtel, and will go back again. However, I don't think it would be suitable for those visitors to our province who are looking for the "Traditional Newfoundland B & B Experience." It has a more modern, European style, I think more suited to business, executive travelers. It was very reasonably priced especially compared to other accommodations in the downtown area. One word of caution, there is no air conditioning in the room we stayed in but early June in Newfoundland was cool and comfortable with the windows open, but I think it would be hot there in the summer months.

Although they ended up charging me more than they were supposed to (and more than they quoted) I still loved this place. The place was basically a townhouse with 3 stories (2 bedrooms, kitchen, living and dining room, etc). It was in a great location (Signal Hill and Downtown) and the breakfast that was included was awesome.

I thought the people were all very friendly (actually I did not meat an unfriendly person in St Johns) and very helpful.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone, especially if they have children.
