“Good hotel near downtown St. John's”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

The hotel is located between Signal Hill in the north and downtown St. John's in the south. You can choose between different rooms and categories - starting at a normal room up to apartments. Our room for one night was a standard hotel room incl. ensuite bathroom. The room was small but had enough space for two person incl. luggage. The room was fully equipped incl. hair dryer, tv-screen, free WiFi, small fridge etc. So we had a good stay during our last night on Newfoundland.
The hotel itself is in walking distance to downtown St. John's and the harbor and directly next the street up to Geo-Center and Signal Hill. So all interesting points are in a short distance to the hotel.
The only bad point is the parking situation. The hotel has only a few parking places in front of the hotel and the most of the other places are neighborhood parking area. So if you travel by car, we can recommend to leave your car at the hotel once you found a free parking area.

But at least we can recommend to stay in the hotel.

Recently stayed at this hotel and was very impressed with not only the location (which was close to downtown and many tourist sites), but also the great service provided by the staff. This hotel offers free long distance and free breakfast with extremely reasonable prices! I would not hestiate to stay at this hotel again. This hotel has it all...great staff, great prices and easy access to everything I wanted to see! Well done Hometel!!!

My husband & I stayed at Hometel on Signal Hill for New Year's Eve. We have stayed there on several other occasions & have always found our room to be clean & comfortable. The location was excellent to see the fireworks from Quidi Vidi Lake; just a short walk from Hometel. Also, the property is located steps away from downtown St. John's so you can easily walk to the many restaurants, shopping & pubs/bars. The staff were very friendly & accommodating & I would not hesitate in recommending this property.

I stayed at the Hometel at two occasions in August and September 2011. It is solid accomodation with free parking in the wonderful Newfoundland capital, where good price competitive accomodation is scarce for a variety of reasons. This is clearly a townhouse apartment development which has been quickly converted into a "hotel" to cater to the energy boomlet demand. The front desk seemed perpetually rushed or clueless, although not unhelpful when pressed. I found no issue with parking, although you must be vigilant in grabbing one of the spaces in front...otherwise you are consigned to a parking lot of an apartment complex behind. The stairs are steep for those with lots of luggage or mobility issues. How to book is a bit complex. On my first stay I had booked a third floor "premiere". The room was small and dingy, although the traditional bathroom was large. It was frankly poor value for money. On my second stay I had a second floor standard, which was a vastly nicer room...brighter, more modern feeling with sleek wood floors and definitely more spacious...and C$20 less than the "premier". this was good value for money. So mixed reviews. The "deluxe" continental breakfast comprises self-service cereal, picked over fruit and tea or coffee and juice in a rather odd setting. Hometel is in a convenient location, easy walking into town or up to Signal Hill.

Room Tip: The standards are good value and even better in my limited experience than the premieres, although I...

For 2 or three couples, this is an ideal choice! Bedrooms were nicely decorated and spacious. Living room and kitchen great for socializing. Continental breakfast was good too. Location makes walking to downtown attractions easy.

Staff is very friendly and extremely accomodating. We will be back!

We stayed in Unit 1202. The room was quite small even for two of us with little space to move around. There was no couch or chair to sit on. The Hometel is basically a series of town-homes renovated into a hotel. I could hear every footstep from the unit above.
The housekeeping was erratic and one day, our room was completely missed out. The girl at the front desk, when told, shrugged it off and replied without a hint of apology, that the housekeeping staff were gone for the day. A few strong words from us brought the manager who cleaned and made up our room herself. In general, Hometel appeared very short staffed.
The WIFI connection was very unreliable and often completely unavailable.
Breakfast was ordinary with no daily variation.
The location is good. Parking in front of the units is limited but there is ample free parking at the rear.
It is a mystery to us how the Hometel is getting such good reviews!

This hotel had very nice rooms, new and clean, spacious bathroom. The breakfast was fine, just muffins, toast, yogurt, hard boiled eggs. The location is great. The parking here kind of sucked though. The key is to grab a spot and don't move your car for the rest of the day because once the spots get taken up it's hard to find one after that. If you don't have a car then no worries.
