Had a reservation for supper, tough to get at short notice. Although the decor is basic the staff are professional and friendly. A fixed 5 course menu with smaller servings, which we like. The food was outstanding, a great taste experience. A wine pairing is available at $70 each, we settled for a nice bottle at $50. If you are going to St John's add this one to your To Do list.

“Hidden treasure on Duckworth Street”
Reviewed June 24, 2014 via mobile

Just off the plane, we were wandering the streets of St. John's when we came across this small restaurant. "We should have dinner here tonight," said my wife. They were all booked up that night but were able to give us their last two seats the next night. Obvious a good restaurant or a very loyal clientele. This restaurant offers a fixed tasting menu each night which means you get no choice but get a series of small plates starting from appetizers and moving on to mains. At the end we were asked did we want one more course, which we of course accepted and this was the best. They have an extensive wine list and it is possible to get pairings with each course should you be willing to pay a somewhat steep price. While a small room, it did feel private and the staff were extremely friendly.

“A Unique Experience”
Reviewed June 18, 2014

I cannot say enough about the wonderful experience we had at The Reluctant Chef in St. John's Newfoundland. This restaurant offers a unique dining experience as it is always a set tasting menu. When you make your reservation, the restaurant asks if you have any food allergies or dislikes. The menu is then adjusted accordingly. We had a party of four. When we arrived, the friendly staff greeted us and we were offered drinks and some homemade bread with a delicious spread. All of us chose the 5 course tasting menu. From start to finish the food was delicious and expertly served. Our menu included cucumber gazpacho, cod tongues, steak with a delicious curry rub, lamb shepherd's pie accompanied by a lovely chutney and lemon tart for dessert. Each course was beautifully prepared offering diners a depth of flavour. I found the spicing of each dish to be perfect, it was in perfect harmony and did not overwhelm the ingredients of the dish. I do not hesitate in highly recommending this restaurant.

“Had an amazing night!”
Reviewed June 1, 2014 via mobile

First, my wife and I walked in to take a look at the menu. The music was a gentle jazz and the waitress was all smiles. We decide to stay.

The 5 service was $59/person. The food was exceptional!

The service was also great and the wine we had (2 bottles) was a 2010 Reata Pinot Noir from Sonoma Valley ($60/bottle). It was such an amazing wine. Wow!

Our bill including tip was $339. The most expensive bill I ever paid in a restaurant, but it was worth every penny.

Great night!!!!!! I would return for sure....

“Great food and great people for a tremendous experience”
Reviewed May 23, 2014

This is a restaurant that really focuses on paying attention to the details to give you the best culinary experience. The chef is well experienced and talented, while the staff are excellent at focusing on the patrons. The food is creative and the chef is willing to listen to put forth the greatest experience for you as the individual. Tony is a tremendous host and overall this is a restaurant that cannot be ignored. It is an absolute must!
