Well worth the drive. Lots of beautiful scenery and interesting stops along the way. Would do this drive again.

“Totally under rated”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

Newfoundland never disappoints. We are from BC and found this hike as good as any hike on the other coast.

We spent just about a week hiking two segments of the ECT - both were so different and incredible. We did the Bay Bulls - Shoal bay and Cape Spear - Petty Harbour sections and the day hike at La Manche's abandoned village. We really timed it right with the whale migration and mostly sunny weather in early August. I highly recommend visiting all these points and want to congratulate the ECT society for the effort keeping the trails in good condition.

We also did all of our travel to/from the trailheads via taxis. There were no rental cars available that week so we had no choice. In retrospect it was the best decision since we likely saved money and didn't have to figure out how to shuttle back to a parked car after hiking. The taxi drivers are also knowledgeable of the trailhead locations. Don't forget to cap off any hiking to Petty Harbour with fish and chips at Chafe's restaurant. Delicious!

One word of warning - Some hikers left considerable amounts of garbage along the trail and mostly near campsites. We even saw several abandoned sleeping bags and tents. Most likely food was left out too. Inevitably this attracts animals, including bears. Please be careful to clean up for the safety of all hikers.

“La Manche Suspension bridge was amazing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

The La Manche suspension bridge has two access points. There is a 2.7 km (1.6 mi) hike along the East Coast Trail from Bauline East. Park at the designated East Coast Trail parking place at the harbour and hike south from there. Alternatively, park at the end of the Lamanche Road, off highway 10 past the entrance to the La Manche Provincial park, and walk for less than 2 km (1.2 mi) to the bridge.

We enjoyed walking the bridge part of the trail and there were so many photo opprotunities. It was quite steep in some areas along this part of the trail - my mom (80yrs) found some spot difficult but she was a real trooper and carried on.

You must do a hike (even if a short one) on the East coast trail. the scenery is breathtaking! in addition, there are wild raspberries and blueberries throughout - an awesome organic and free treat! :-)

“A hiker's dream!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2013

The ECT is an incredible thing to behold. A short review can't do it justice. With a wide variety of trails over almost 300 km of shoreline, there is something for almost every level of hiker, from afternoon trips on gentle trails trips to multi-day hikes over rough terrain. The trails are well marked and easy to follow, so the most advanced hikers might prefer a backcountry hike like the International Appalachian Trail hikes on the west coast, but be sure, some of these hikes are very challenging! Check out hiketheseastcoasttrail.wordpress.com for more of my commentary on individual trails and a load of pics!
