I live in St. John's. The East Coast Trail is a coastal hiking trail along the shores of the Avalon Peninsula. It has many sections and should be traveled at different times. Many sections require you to leave a car at one end and walk/hike to a car left at another end. Great views!

The trails can be very challenging to access in places, but it's well worth the work! The scenery is always beautiful with good weather on the ECT.

If you want to hike along some spectacular scenery high obove the ocean this is the trail. You can do a little or a lot depending on how much time you have. A long the cliffs you'll find wildflowers,
blueberries, chanterells and great views. You likely to see whales and all sorts of seabirds.

I recently spent 6 days hiking sections of this beautiful trail. Wow!

The non-profit trail association has done a fantastic job at creating fun-to-hike, interesting, sure-footed trails. Many have stairs created from 4x4 logs and rocks, boardwalks covering bogs, and huge stepping stones positioned in just the right places. We hiked mid-July and saw an abundance of wild flowers and berries. The bake apples and blueberries were not quite ripe, but the raspberries were just coming on. The views were spectacular - rocky vistas everywhere, and the sky/weather is always changing, so the light changes constantly, too. Gorgeous!

Favorites were Mickeleens Path with delightful woodland sections and an interesting 3-years-later-view of hurricane damage; and Cape Spear, where we hiked down to the ocean. The Cape Spear hike featured banks of flag irises in full bloom, and numerous pitcher plants, bake apples and other flowers in the bogs. Whale sightings galore, and down by the water one got to see the same types of rocks that are all over the upper trails, only pounded down to smooth round shapes by the ocean. Very, very cool. Or maybe I just like rocks.

Vibram-soled hiking boots HIGHLY recommended on all trails - some of the rocks, both big boulders and smaller scree, can be slippery, and in the wooded areas roots can often be a tripping hazard. Bring more water than you think you'll need - I only brought a quart and kept running out. Bring snacks, too, as there isn't much in the way of stores at either end of the trails.

I am extremely grateful to the people of Newfoundland who worked so hard to create the East Coast Trail. It is truly magnificent.
