Located at the highest point above the core of the city, the Basilica was the largest church built in North America at the time of its construction. It is generally open free of charge to the public to view its magnificent interior and stained glass windows that were designed by english and French glaziers of the day.

Built in the middle of the 19th century (and one of the few buildings in the city to survive the 1892 fire) the basilica is simply a "must see". Reminds me of many European cathedrals that I've visited.

How these poor people could have managed to erect this spectacular building. World class. A must see in St. john's

There must be very few pictures of St. John's looking up from the harbour that does not include this iconic structure. That alone qualifies it for a visit. It is majestic and yet once inside, it is also clearly a place of deep and heartfelt worship. Then stand on the steps and look down on all jelly bean houses. Definitely worth visiting.
