“Great service, great location”
Reviewed October 25, 2007

Great service, very friendly staff, great location.
My room was a bit small but well furnished with all the ammenities you would expect from a Fairmont. Great sea view upon request.
This hotel could certainly use some refurbishment but it really does the job for a St. John's stay.
Again, great friendly service.

Where: Fairmont, St. John’s Newfoundland

When: September 07

Who: I spend approximately 20% of my time on the road. I typically stay at Hiltons and Marriotts

Why: Business

Location: The Fairmont is located within view of, and a short walk from the waterfront. It’s within throwing distance of Water and Duckworth streets, which contain many of the town’s better restaurants and more interesting shops. It’s a 20 minute / $25 CDN taxi ride from the airport, but then so is everything else in St. John’s. The view from the water-facing side of the hotel is very nice.

Check-in: The check in process was quick, courteous, and professional.

Layout: The lobby, restaurant, and gift shop area are all conveniently located on the first floor. On any given floor, there is only one hallway to negotiate to get to and from the rooms.

Rooms: The rooms are spacious and very clean. The door to my room took a little tug to open and close completely. I thought it was just my door, until the following morning when housekeeping was cleaning the room in the general vicinity. For a 1 hour period, from about 8am – 9am, it sounded like they were having a door closing contest. As I was working elsewhere for all but one day, tho, it wasn’t an issue. The beds and pillows are comfortable, and the linens are clean. The water pressure in the shower was fine, and there was plenty of hot water. The consistency of the water temp was good, as was the ability to adjust it. The room had an iron / ironing board, and fridge/minibar.

Service: The housekeeping service was fine. I had no issues except for the door closing incident, which wasn’t their fault.

Restaurants: The food at the restaurant (I can’t remember the name, sorry) was very good. In particular, the French onion soup was the best I’ve ever had, bar none. They kept my water glass full, and I never had to wait for anything. I was very happy with everything, and highly recommend it.

Internet: There is a fee to use the internet, but I never had trouble connecting or staying connected. The speed was just fine for everything I needed to do.

Gift Shop: Unlike just about every gift shop in every other hotel of this caliber, this one didn’t sell juices and soft drinks.

Summary: The St. James Fairmont is an extremely nice, convenient place to stay. My satisfaction, however, is largely based on the fact that someone else paid the bills. While I was extremely happy with everything, I think I probably could have found better value for my own money somewhere else.

Good location for sightseeing although hotel not attractive to look at externally. Good dining and breakfast experience but those on a budget or with children could find half price alternatives within 5 minutes of the hotel. Staff were lovely and room overlooking St John's Harbour was nice touch. Plenty of parking for those with own transport.

My wife and daughter and I stayed at the Fairmont for a week, and while it was a great quality hotel, I doubt we'll be going back.

In terms of service, everyone was exceptional, from the doorman who greeted us every day to the front desk and reception through to the housecleaning crew. Stellar service. Any problem was rectified quickly without a hitch.

Location-wise, the hotel has an amazing view of the harbour and city, so no matter if you're on a Narrows' view side or a city view side, you still have a gorgeous view out your window. Plus, you can easily walk down to Waters St. and enjoy the boutiques and shops in the touristy area.

My only complaint is on the noise level in such a high-end hotel. We had a room with an adjoining door, and while it remained closed the entire stay, we could hear everything going on in the other room. But to make matters worse, the other side of our room was the stairwell, and each and every time someone exited the door, it would slam shut so loudly that you'd swear someone had just slammed your own room door.

Another word of caution: even if you get a deal on the room, everything else is very pricey, so be ready for it. We ordered in from other restaurants, because the in-house prices were astronomical, and way over our budget as a small family.

But all in all, the service was impeccable, as was the cleanliness and facilities (pool, fitness room, etc.) and if it weren't for the budget (and the noise levels!) it would have been a 5 star experience for sure.

It was amazing to wake up and see the view - and take a look at it as I fell asleep. I loved looking out over the houses (view of the city - not the water), It is such a colourful city so don't worry if your view is 'city' rather than 'harbour'. It's fabulous. The food was very good as well - and there was nothing the staff wouldn't do - from contacting tour operators to looking things up on the internet. It's a wonderful property - worth every penny.

Stayed 3 nights at the Fairmount St. John's during a convention.

Comfortable, clean, great service. Hotel restaurant is very good but like most hotels of the category, prices are exhorbitants. I had a very good rate of $159 CAD.

No problems to report with room, bathroom, except perhaps some delay to get hot water, but nothing out of the ordinary for a large property as this.

I would have expected the hotel to be located closer to waterfront (but it's not far, really) and closer to where the downtown action is, but St. John's is a small place so this is minor.

Try to get a room with a view on the harbour, it is worth it for what I could see.
