Bacalao is a located in a cosy tiny house located near St John's Centre. It aims to create a new version of the Newfoundland cuisine and they just got it right! Food was really amazing and the atmosphere is charming. Definitely a must-go!

We spent our 20th anniversary on May 6, 2014 with Bacalao. I hadn't been to the restaurant in over 5 years and my wife had never been there before. From start to finish everything was superb. We had the charcuterie as a starter... what flavours from the smoked partridge, duck confit, moose sausage, chutney, mustards, etc. Blown away. The chicken was extremely moist and tender, and the cod-pot is highly recommended as it melted in your mouth. Topped off with a banana flambe (with a special twist from our fantastic waitress), the meal was heaven. New favourite restaurant in St. John's.

A good decoration and atmosphere. The jig dinner starter and the basque calamari are particularly tasty.
For the main course, The lamb and the duck are good. However between the starter and the main course we waited one hour with no explanation. Hopefully, it is not a restaurant policy for them to try to sell more drinks during the waiting time.
A good culinary experience to try in St. John s.

Thanks for your review Greg. So glad you enjoyed your evening! Just wanted to let you know that any wait time longer than guests would like is never an intentional attempt to sell extra anything. While we always aim for a leisurely dining experience, and never rush guests, we do try to manage wait time so it's appropriate for the pace of each particular table. We also try to manage the reservation book arrival times so that neither the wait staff nor the kitchen fall behind. The reality is this is a 'people' business, so we don't have control over early or late arrivals etc. We do our best, always, to keep up, but there are times we do fall behind. I am sorry we kept you waiting. And I am also happy you understood. Looking forward to seeing you again! Andrea

The exterior is underwhelming. The interior decor is very warm and tasteful. We came for fish and weren't disappointed. For starters we ordered the crab salad and the jiggs dinner cabbage roll. The crab was somewhat overpowered by the dressing but very good all the same. The cabbage roll was imaginative and tasty. For mains we ordered the pan fried halibut and specially prepared cod. Both dishes were perfectly cooked and very generous in size. We shared the ginger cake for dessert. It was delicious. The food was exceptional, our server was charming and we had a lovely evening. My only criticism was a very long wait between starter and main. Our server checked back with us during the wait but no explanation was offered. I could only assume that the kitchen got backed up as the restaurant was quite busy. A comp glass of wine or piece of cake might have been a nice touch in view of the wait time.

I came from Brazil for business and this is my 3rd time in newfoundland. the food is fantastic and also the service. We had to arrange a last minute business dinner and we choose Bacalao, what a good pick. The food was excellent, the service was very good and both of the daily specials were very good.
