Homeport Historic B&B / Inn c 1858
Ranked #4 of 14 Saint John B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 2, 2009

This is a giant, sprawling, interesting old property, with, yes, cool views. It was also a bit on the odd side. (And I've probably stayed in 40 or 50 inns or B and B's over the years, so I have plenty of other places to compare it to.) Weirdest of all: there was no door separating our bathroom from our bedroom; strange. It was a nice, big bathroom with classic white tiles and a nice tub -- but who wants to sit on the, err, john within earshot of your traveling companion? The neighborhood was also a bit depressing: We walked out to find a place for dinner, and it wasn't exactly scenic strolling. (Down-at-heels storefronts, a "nowheresville" feeling.) The decor was a mix of real antiques and a bit of (unintentional) kitschy tchotckes and statuary. Overall, I think I would give it a more enthusiastic review -- for "eccentric charm," say -- if the price were considerably less. My companion and I agreed that the price was much too high for the property. Nice folks, tho! Wish I could be more enthusiastic, for their sake!

Hi Ripcurl
Thanks for the review Sorry your room and stay with us was not to your liking, wish you had mentioned something about this at the time. For any future guests The Fort Latour room is the only room with no actual door although there is seperation between the bed and bathrooms. It is thru two archedoorways and around two right angle corners with a small anti- room outside the bathroom area. This was one of the original 1930s bathrooms and due to the configuration of closet and hall doors we cannot find a spot to hang another door. Sorry. in 8 years we have only had one other complaint about this setup and we gladly moved the guests into another suite.

As to our decorating I am not sure what "kitschy tchotckes and statuary" is but I do thank you for the compliment of our "eccentric charm" .

As to the price I will put Homeport prices againt any of my collegues as good value for the money and well in line of the area. Once again I wish you had made some comment to us so we could have corrected the situation for you. At least we faired better then the other place you reviewed.

Staying here was a wonderful experience. The owners and staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable both of the history of the area and the house itself.
The location is superb for accessing the city and tourist sites and the view of the harbour is without equal. There is plentiful parking (free) on site.
The rooms were spotless and decorated with a wonderful eye. Breakfast was excellent. There is no other comparable place to stay in Saint John--I will return. Five stars!!!

Wonderful historic B&B. Lovely formal bedrooms and sitting rooms.
Very elegant and clean. Owner happy to explain history of place and to attend to all needs. Bedrooms are all up stairs. Very nice full breakfast. Well worth the price.

Our family of 4 stayed at Homeport for 2 nights in August 2008. What a beautiful place - large spacious rooms, beautiful antiques throughout, fascinating history, and most importantly, friendly helpful owners and staff. And to top it off, the breakfast was a delicious feast of homemade goodies. I would highly recommend this B&B to anyone wanting a pleasant, unique experience in Saint John. Or if you are not planning on going to Saint John, take a detour and visit the city, and let. Ralph and Karen fill you in on where to go and what to see.

We were so impressed with this beautiful old property, its convenient location, the reasonable tariff, great breakfast and friendly hosts, Ralph & Karen Holyoke. We stayed going to Halifax and returning, a different room each way, but both well appointed and comfortable.

My wife comes from Saint John, so we visit this nice little city once or twice a year. Every time we come, we absolutely have to stay at the Homeport Inn. Ralph and Karen are wonderful hosts and have a beautiful Inn. We enjoy the room (we always stay in our former honeymoon suite - The Crows Nest), always enjoy the AMAZING food, and love the company of Ralph and Karen.

I can't recommend the Homeport Inn enough - it is simply the best.
