“Clean and basic, but rather run-down”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2013

My wife and I spent one night here on Sept. 19, 2013 in a "superior" room that had a 2-star Priceline rating (room # 2 or 3, sorry I can't remember which). Our room was clean, and the refrigerator, microwave, TV, toilet, and shower all worked fine. The room was "adequate" for a one-night stay, but there were a number of items that, in this reviewer's opinion, turn this into a Priceline 1-star rather than 2-star rating:
-- There was a floor lamp that fell apart when moved slightly
-- The toilet base was supported on a wood plank (the toilet worked fine, but we were fearful that some strange bug might crawl out)
-- The toilet paper holder wouldn't turn to unroll the paper (a second used roll was placed on top of it)
-- Bath towels and washcloths were thread bare
--There was a soiled bath towel, presumably from a previous guest, hanging on the back of the bathroom door (this can happen in the best of lodges, but still worth noting when this happens)
-- The Priceline site noted "Featuring views of the Bay of Fundy," and that is technically correct if one uses lawyer-speak, but extremely misleading because the Bay is about five miles away and you can get only a partial view of the water over the tree tops, if you stand on the street next to the motel.
-- The Priceline site also noted "breakfast buffet" as an amenity, but we asked the friendly desk clear about this and he said that they don't offer breakfasts this time of year--but upon our careful inspection, the Priceline site did not actually refer to this as a "free breakfast buffet," so this is perhaps only another example of misleading, yet not technically illegal, information.
-- No smoke detector, even though there was a spot where it appears there used to be one

In general, the room's run-down appearance suggests that repairs/improvements have been neglected over a long period of time. I would guess this motel has been here for more than 50 years, and will at least give credit to the owners in trying to keep the rooms clean for their guests: but the "superior" room was surely not worth the $75 we paid, particularly given that we were traveling in the off-season! By all means, feel comfort in staying here, but don't expect more than a Priceline 1-star quality.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room, before checking in, and be sure to check that the bathroom is not only clean bu...

First I was not sure about what to expect due to the low price. However, when I arrived there and saw the rooms, I was pleasantly surprised and realized that I got a great deal for the money. The room and bathroom were clean and spacious, and the location of the motel is in a nice quiet neighborhood. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and there for you 24 hours a day. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who likes to visit St. Johns-NB.

We stayed at this motel on the weekend. The location was nice & quiet. The rooms were clean and spacious. There was free Wi-Fi and the owner was really cooperative. The coffee was available on request. Overall it was a peaceful and satisfactory experience.

When I saw this motel online, I was willing to give it a try for the lower price, being that my month in a half in the Maritimes was coming to an end and I needed more economical lodging. Upon arriving at the Motel, I saw the Canada Select sign, which further encouraged me to stay. Had I ventured in and "cased the joint" out as it were, I would have ventured to another establishment. The rooms were cleans, the bed was adequate; not greatly comfortable, but the furnishings were vintage "Value City/Salvation Army" caliber all painted, or sprayed, with bright white house paint giving it that just primed look.

On the phone, when I reserved the room, I was quoted $50 for the night and informed the owner that I would be bringing my two cats in a cage. He insisted that they remain in the cage other than a short time to roam around the room. He feared cat hair all over the bed spreads. Hmm? Wouldn't they be washed? I agreed to the terms, but the next day a family left their room with two large dogs on a lease. Somehow, I felt as if I was treated a bit severely.

As part of the deal with the room, I was to get to vouchers for a hot breakfast at the diner across the way. When I paid the bill, I was not charged $50, but $84! The breakfasts consisted of one egg, a cup of coffee, a slice of ham and a piece of toast. I was charged almost $34 above the original cost of the room, and found out that a bigger breakfast at the diner would have been about $4.50!

It was cool out that night, but I did search for an AC unit to take out the humidity from the room, only to fine none. Instead, I found one window in the room which barely opened; a wooden window from the 1940's and another window with was painted shut. The TV worked fine, to some small credit to the establishment, but other than this "luxury", the room was more like a housekeeping unit from some Boyscout camp.

In the bathroom, towels were clean, but one was hung on a hanger. Again, bare bones! The floor was varnished planks which were right out of the 1950's. Canada Select? Maybe fifty years ago. I could have stayed at a new Motel Six in St.John for the same price with free coffee. The diner was the best deal of it all!

$40 tops would be more à propos in price, including the breakfast!

Ravinder S, Owner at Regent Motel, responded to this review, September 13, 2012
This is the response for the review posted above. Two guests booked a room with one bed for a night and were given the price of $50 per person and $5 for each additional person. However, the guest later informed us that they had two cats with them. It was informed to the guests that the room they had booked is not a pet’s friendly room and we did not have any pet’s friendly room available for that night. So they would have to keep the cats within the cage they had with them for our any future guests with allergy concerns, etc. Plus, only $10 fees were charged to cover the cost of thoroughly cleaning the guest room, since the two cats they had were really furry. So the total of $60 plus taxes which came to $67.80 was charged. This price included two guests, two cats and free breakfast in the morning. The guest was given the key for the room along with the receipt for $67.80 not $84.00 for a night. The story mentioned above on overcharging the guests is fake and is a way to give a bad name to our business.
We are sorry about the inconvenience and all our guests are treated equally and well.
Thanks
