“Always a pleasure”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

We've been semi-regulars at the Star for about 5 years. We typically eat breakfast there at least once a month and the food and service is consistently above average. Anyplace else we go for breakfast usually ends in a case of MSG mouth(dry pasties afterwards), but never at the Star. We live in the neighbourhood so sometimes on a Friday after work, we'll call to see if we can get a table. If Ken (greatest waiter EVER) is working and answers the phone, we always manage to get a table. I will concede that the dinner menu is quite pricey, and we will order off of that on special occasions, but the burgers which are considerably cheaper are absolutely fantastic. The dessert case is ever changing with an excellent selection depending on what your taste is. I've heard rumour that the restaurant is going to be expanding at some point in the future and the brunch that was offered at the Star at the Park Conservatory will be offered on Portage. I am quite looking forward to that, just for the endless desserts.

“Hole-in-the-wall that pleasantly surprised”
Reviewed November 28, 2012 via mobile

As we walked up to the storefront that houses the Star, we were wondering what was behind the recommendation we'd gotten earlier in the day. When the waiter who greeted us at the door asked what name our reservation was under, we figured there might just be something below the surface here. (We didn't have a res, but were seated immediately in the moderate crowd.)

I went with the recommended bean soup to start, and was happy with the flavors, quality and quantity. The tenderloin penne was nicely done and presented. Good, solid and flavorful food with excellent and quick service. The only problem I encountered was essentially eating too much before falling prey to the cake case... and the kahlua chocolate torte which nicely rounded things (mostly me) out.

Perhaps next time I'll start with cake and work my way back to a salad. Lots of flight time and no decent food opportunities tomorrow will help rectify the situation.

Good solid food at an equally good price/value ratio.

“A favorite summer brunch venue revisited on a sunny winter day”
Reviewed November 18, 2012

Our table in the sun was heavenly after weeks of grey skies! Very pleasant service unfazed by our gluten free toast request. We had the cosmic brekki which is a kind of all in calorie indulgence. Yummy and worth the trip. Noisy familea et al had not arrived when we left shortly after 11

Nice day for a walk across the bridge to Assiniboine Park. What's not to like?

“overpriced and over rated”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

Fancy atmosphere, mediocre service and food was very overpriced and not overly special. Sides were over salted to the point I actually said something about it and the response was uncaring nor concerned

“Lots of atmosphere”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

Lunch at the Star Grill was a pleasant experience. Service was pleasant and efficient. Portions are very adequate. Reuban sandwiches were great; special of the day was a denver on multigrain and it was excellent; Brie and cranberry was yummy. Sanadwiches are served with choice of soup, salad, or fries. Fries are the old fashioned home-made ones worth the calories. Salads are crisp and tasty. The desserts look fabulous but one never has room to try them! Very busy so reservations recommended.
