“Wonderful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

Went here on Valentine's day for a fantastic meal! Requested a specific table which was ready when we arrived. Service and food was excellent. I always want to try something new, but always end up ordering the Fantasy and a litre of House Red. Dinner for 2 under $100, always great!

“Great, But Not”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2013

Went tonight with another couple to celebrate a birthday. Had reserved table #8 by the window. The people were not done and we were given a table by the kitchen with the promise we would be moved shortly. That never happened. Puts a damper on the evening.

That said, service was great as well as the menu and the wine list. Excellent!

But, the ambiance is terrible. A large single room with high ceilings and all conversation is amplified. We had to shout to our friends to be heard and the shouting was still not always effective. I would rate the experience as poor other than the fact that the food and service are very good, if not excellent. So, if you don't want to converse, 5 stars. Otherwise, not a good choice.

“Consistent with every visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013 via mobile

I've been to cafe Carlo a number of times over the years. Last night we ended up here for supper and I left with mixed feelings. We had spring roll appetizers and two pasta dishes, fusilli sea and cannelloni. Spring rolls were great, piping hot, crispy and full of flavor. The fusilli was equally great. I love hot pasta. Unfortunately the salads were mediocre at best. I upgraded to the chicken curry which I couldn't identify, let alone finish. The service was sufficient and professional. I prefer Cafe Carlo for lunch and prefer the Bonfire Bistro (same owner) for it's more casual atmosphere.

“Fantastic food, great environment”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 5, 2013 via mobile

This is our favourite restaurant in Winnipeg. A must go every year for our anniversary. Excellent food and pleasant, relaxing environment. Their calamari is the BEST we have eaten anywhere in North America. A real gem of a restaurant.

“Skip the February special”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2013

Cafe Carlo is a lovely restaurant that really knows what it's doing. They make a lot of dishes that are hard to resist, so it can take an effort to order something else (because that means NOT having one's favourite that evening).
However, I took the plunge and tried their 3-course prix fixe the other day. It runs until near the end of Feb 2013.
First course, Moroccan lentil soup, is a real delight on a cold night, hearty and full of many flavours. The house bread is perfect too.
The main course is another story, a failed collision of several otherwise good parts. Black linguine + crab meat + salsa verde sounds interesting and looks OK -- at first. But what's that watery puddle on the bottom? It's leaking out of the overcooked chunks of green pepper and onion that i suppose is the salsa verde. There's no actual sauce, nothing that brings the flavourless shredded crab meat together with the shiny black pasta. They threw bread crumbs all over it too, and of course they just got soggy from the vegetable water. And to think I could have had the Fett Chile instead!
The dessert is a terribly sweet bread pudding with creme fraiche and butterscotch syrup. If you like sweet desserts (is there any other kind?) this is for you.
So by all means go to Cafe Carlo and order one of the many great items on their menu... just stay away from that prix fixe.
